| Here are some pictures and a description of my old filtration system. I also have a newer one that can be seen here. Components 1. Cheap home water filter housing ($20-$40) 2. 5 micron filter element (Ebay is a good place to buy) I got mine here at 5 Star Water 3. 15 gallon pressure vessel with dip tub and at least two extra ports (you can pick the size that is most appropriate for you. 15 gallons matches my on car veggie tank size.) 4. Air line quick connects. 5. Compressor - 1.5 horse power 3 gallon Craftsman 6. 10 to 15 feet of 3/8" inner diameter fuel hose. 7. Four 3/8" barb fittings for the following. Out of tank. Into filter housing. Out of filter housing plug for the end. If you tank heats up from storage in the garage you will want a plug for the end or it will push oil out as it heat up. 8. Relief valve for tank. I don't have one yet but I should. 9. Hose clamps 10. Zip ties 11. Big cheap plastic funnel Tank Modifications I cut the dip tube so it was about 6 inches from the bottom of the tank. This allows for settling of solids and water. Most dip tubes go all the way to the bottom. This can cause your filter to clog more quickly or allow water into your on car veggie tank. Filtration Procedure 1. Fill pressure vessel with veggie oil 2. Let sit for at least 24 hours 3. Place tubing into the on car veggie tank 4. Set compressor to 20 PSI 5. Connect the tank to compressor 6. When tank is getting close to the level you want you will have to dupm the pressure inthe tank. This is where a releif valve is handy. If you have more in the filter tank that can fit in the on car tank and you don't have a way to depressurize the tank you could overflow it. Depending on how contaminated your veggie oil source is you will want to pour out the oil remaining in the tank The oil below the dip tube is where the nasty stuff and water will collect. Probably weeks to months time frame based on your grease. Other Ideas If you have oil with lots of chunks you can add a prefilter inline. This will prevent your filter element from clogging to quickly. It's not that the 5 micron filters are expensive it's just more work to change them out a lot and it will take longer to fill your tank as the filter gets clogged faster without a prefilter. |
