| Coolant Lines Installation Part 1: Tips, Warnings and Preparation |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| Warnings There is an auxiliary coolant pump and valves that supply the heater core in the climate control system. This can restrict coolant flow when the heater is turned off. It is important to install the coolant tee fitting prior to the auxilary pump to ensure good flow of coolant through the system. The auxillary pump is mountedon the driver side wheel well under the wiper fluid reservoir. I created my own Tee fittings for the coolant hoses because the Greasecar.com fittings were too small for my coolant lines. They were closer to a 3/4 inner diameter than 5/8 Tips Always put a hose clamp on the hose before putting the hose on the barb. Its hard to get a hose off a barb.. Try to figure out the best direction for the screw head to face on hose clamp to make it easy to tighten. If you have trouble pushing a hose onto a barb fitting then use veggie oil or regular oil for a fuel line and coolant for the coolant line for lubrication. Do not over tighten the hose clamps. They do not need to be extremely tight. The hose should not bulge from the tightness of the clamp. Cut hoses as straight and clean as possible to minimize a jagged edge and reduce the likelihood that they will crack in the future. If you have to remove a hose that was pushed on a barb fitting and you cannot pull it off you will have to cut it. When you cut it try not to cut it all the way through or you may scratch the barb fitting and create a future leak. Dont forget to use the TFE paste for the threaded fittings Drain Coolant from Car Drain coolant by pulling open the cover under the bumper in front of car (passenger side) and using a large flathead screwdriver to unscrew the red valve. Drain into containers. Use some 3/8" ID hose to direct the fluid from the drain valve to your container to help prevent spills. You could reuse the coolant but replacement with new is the best policy. Be sure to clean up any spills. Coolant is toxic and can kill pets and people if ingested. Assemble the Coolant Fittings Assemble the coolant tee fittings. See Coolant Supply Tee picture below for supply tee fitting locations and Coolant Return Tee picture below for return tee fitting locations. The location of the 5/8 barb fitting is different for each tee. For the return tee fitting the 5/8 is on the bottom and for the supply tee the 5/8 barb is on one of the sides. Tip: On the return tee fitting I cut off one of the four barbs to shorten the fitting. Cut the one barb off with a hack saw and file sharp edges. Once the assembly is tightened together, grind down the hex head on barb fitting with a grinder or Dremmel tool. This allows the hose to slide all the way up the tee. This will shorten the length of the tee making it easier to fit into the space between bends in the hose. |
