HORIZON
I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round he sped.
I was disturbed at this;
I accosted the man.
It is futile, I said,
You can never-
You lie, he cried,
And ran on.

THE HOUSE CAT
The house cat sits
And smiles and sings.
He knows a lot,
Of secret things.

INVICTUS
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears,
Looms but the Horror of the shade.
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

I, and all the public know
What all schoolshildren learn.
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.

AN IRISH BLESSING
May there always be work for your hands to do,
May your purse always hold a coin or two,
May the sun always shien upon your window pane,
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain,
May the hand of a friend always be near you,
And may God fill your hreat with gladness to cheer you.

THE KNITTING CLUB
She perches, budgie like,
Tries to ignore me.
She tells me
I dont know what pain is,
Sees me as a creature
Wanting to destroy her
And her culture of crochet.
Were all the same she tells us.
(Teenagers that is).
It wasnt that way when she was my age.
Oh no.
Shewants me to learn to knit
Instead of having friends, of course.
Her life is to please
Everyone but herself.
I let her string her own yarns.
