| OLD NORTHWEST MINE was began in 1902 and closed in 1926. It was located just north of the intersection of State Roads 48 and 59 on the east side of SR 59. Its depth was 75 feet and during its time in operation it shipped 2,265,000 tons of coal. |

| William Griffith (Max Griffith's father) and his uncle, John Bain, in Vandalia #27 (White Rabbit) located near White Rose. The coal is nine feet high. The picture was taken around 1909. William Griffith moved to Jasonville in 1921 and later worked at Bon Aire II. |
