I made this as an example of some of the steps involved in making a knife. I had many customers asking what types of machines are used, how are hamon lines done, etc. Hopefully this will show a general outline of the process. This pic tutorial is aimed more towards customers than potential knifemakers. Info such as heat treat temps, steel wool grits, epoxide selection, etc have been left out to shorten the tutorial.
Step One

Once I select the steel I want
to use(in this case 1095) I use
a template to trace my design
onto the steel. For standard
models such as these I use an
aluminum template i have
preground to shape.
Step Two

After drawing the design on its
time to cut out the general
shape of the knife. A metal
cutting bandsaw speeds up
this process, but you can also
use a drill, hacksaw, chisel,
etc. In this example i used a
1/4" drill. It's not as fast as
using my bandsaw but it's still
pretty quick
Step Three

After drilling out the holes you
can either saw or chisel the
holes together to break the
steel into individual pieces.
With hole spacing practice you
can get the holes close
enough where you can easily
break the steel..which is what i
did this time.
Step Four

A few minutes with a sharp
belt on the belt sander will
grind the excess steel off and
give you the outline of the
knife.
