Past and Present of Singapore
The Singapore River marks an important place in the Singapore's history. Sir Stamford Raffles, Singapore's founding father, had sailed up the Singapore River in 1918. In 1822, Raffles Quay, Collyer Quay, Boat Quay, Clark Quay and Robertson Quay were built near the Singapore River to serve Singapore's trade purposes. Merchants vlater developed these quays into commerical areas.
Today, the old warehouses at the various quays serve a different purpose. The river was used to be where smaller boats, sampan panjangs, and shallow-drought vessels docked. Commerical activity in the Singapore River finally ended in September1983, when lighters were moved to Pasir Panjang. The warehouses along the Boat Quay and Clarke Quay were restored and turned into a colourful and lively recreational and entertainment area. |
