Jolene Blalock Tells TV Guide She Originally Passed on T'Pol
With Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan headed to Fox's Boston Public this fall, Trekkers need a new alien voluptuary to fix their tricorders on. Clearly, newcomer Jolene Blalock will ably fill her form-fitting catsuit as Vulcan officer T'Pol on UPN's Enterprise.
Surprisingly though, she nearly turned her nose up at the idea of wearing Vulcan ears!
"I passed on the [Trek prequel] three times without reading the script," she confesses to TV Guide Online. Whether her agent persuaded the 26-year-old actress via neck pinch or mind meld we'll never know, but she came to her senses and got on board with the high-profile project. "Had I passed on this," she says, "it would've been the dumbest move of my life.  Talk about regrets! I'm so fortunate to bechosen for this part."
Though Blalock daily must don "Satanic pointy ears" and a wig — "It takes about two hours to get into full costume" — she's always pleased with the end result: "It's really cool. Once I'm in the outfit, I am T'Pol."
And who is this T'Pol, exactly? "She's 65 years old, so she's older than the rest of the crew," Blalock explains. "She is feline in movement. She is diplomatic with her words. And she does not look at humans condescendingly, though she is a superior race, so it may seem that way.  She's just learning about human nature and the positives of feeling emotion."
Natch, T'Pol is steadfastly logic-oriented, which reminds Blalock of the perennial Spock/Bones feud on the original Trek. "I loved it," she laughs. "It was like, 'You green-blooded fool!'"

Maxim's Fall Preview
From the September 2001 Maxim Magazine:
You know her as: Gorgeous Greek sorceress Medea on last year’s
TV miniseries Jason and the Argonauts, costarring with her favorite actor, Dennis Hopper. “I was pinching myself the whole time,” she raves.

New show: Enterprise, a much-hyped prequel to the ’60s Star Trek
series. “I’m a fan, but just of the original,” says Jolene. “I’m embarrassed because I’ve never watched the other shows.” (UPN, Wednesday, 8 P.M.)

She plays: T’Pol, a Vulcan babe who’s second in command of the cosmos-hopping ship. “I wear the pointy ears and a wig with bangs, like Spock. I look like a little pixie.”

Jolene Blalock Talks To The Press
Jolene Blalock spoke, along with other cast members, to the press at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

On playing T'Pol, Blalock said, "There's a great advantage in it because, in contrast to Scott's presence — his manly strength, his presence as a captain, his leadership, and it being a testosterone-driven team — the femininity is actually to our advantage, or to my advantage. And it's nothing that you have to push. It just is. And so it's easy to embody that, and it's a great contrast. There's power in femininity that I am still discovering. And it's slight, but it's beautiful. T'Pol is feline in her movements. She's diplomatic with her words. And she's dry. So in contrast to all the emotion ... it works well. It works well."

"It takes just shy of two hours to get in full wardrobe and makeup. But you don't feel the ears. You don't feel the wig. They're very well made. And once I'm in full costume, I am T'Pol. It's empowering, if anything."

On the Original Series, she said: "I'm an avid original Star Trek fan. I grew up on it. My favorite was Spock, so it's really strange for me. I would sit there with my dad and my brother and just watch the show, watching the relationship between Captain Kirk, Bones, Spock. My favorite relationship was between Bones and Spock because it was this animosity and this love-hate relationship, but overall there was such utter loyalty between all three of them. I love the way they worked together."

"And as far as being prepared for what's coming, I'm using something that works for me, and that's just called denial."

Robert Beltran Gives Jolene Blalock Advice
Robert Beltran, who played Chakotay on Voyager, recently spoke to Starburst Magazine about his Voyager complaints, and the lack of use of his character.  Asked for advice to give to Jolene Blalock, who is playing the First Officer in the new series,  "I don't think it has anything to do wth [your position on the ship]…you're going to be in trouble if the writers don’t care about your character. Say what you feel, and let them know that you expect a certain quality. As long as you offer that quality yourself, you have every right to expect it from someone else."

Character Overview

SUB-COMMANDER T'POL / JOLENE BLALOCK
Sub-Commander T'Pol is a Vulcan assigned to watch over humanity's progress as it bursts onto the final frontier.  As such, she is often at odds with the Captain.
The casting sheet describes her as "Late 20s, early 30s. Vulcan female. Austere yet sensual. She's the Science Officer assigned to oversee humanity's progress on board Enterprise. "

Jolene Blalock is best known for playing Medea in the mini-series Jason and the Argonauts.  There had been a lot of speculation that T'Pol would be a role akin to Seven of Nine-- a character with inherent sexual traits, even if she doesn't acknowledge them or consider them important.  The casting of Blalock seems to confirm that intention.  Why?  Oh, could be her Maxim Magazine photo spread!  Along with that spread she gave a fascinating interview where she dropped such pearls of wisdom as "I love to work. You want to talk about natural highs? There's nothing like it. It's better than sex."  (At least she will be dedicated to her job.)

Originally, this character was named "T'Pau".  That lead to speculation that this character was intended to be the younger version of the character that Celia Lovsky played in TOS' "Amok Time".
