Songs for a New World Awards

One Whatsonstage.com 2002 Theatregoers' Choice Award

Craig Purnell - Best Actor (Songs For A New World - Bridewell Theatre, London)

"It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back. The moment you think you know where you stand, the things that you're sure of slip from your hand, and you're suddenly a stranger in some completely different land."

-- Jason Robert Brown

Four performers: two women and two men. A five person band, with the composer at the piano. It was just a collection of songs; written at different times for different projects. And yet somehow it all came together. Although it only lasted 28 performances, a standard run, at the WPA Theatre, this musical revue of songs by the up-and-coming composer Jason Robert Brown was met with much acclaim, and foreshadowed what was to come with this incredibly talented man.

"Hear my song--
It'll help you believe in tomorrow
Hear my song--
It'll show you the way you can shine
Hear my song--
It was made for the time
When you don't know where to go
Listen to the song that I sing
You'll be fine"

A production of Songs for a New World made its European premiere at the Bridewell Theatre in London in 2001. It featured Sarah Redmond, Golda Rosheuvel, Craig Purnell, and Nigel Richards in its cast and was met with high acclaim. The Bridewell Theatre premieres cutting edge new works alongside classics of the musical repertoire, and endeavors to provide developmental opportunities for those working within this genre of theatre.
