When the musical Parade hit Broadway in November of 1998, it was perhaps one of the most ambitious and controversial shows that the Lincoln Center Theater of New York ever undertook. The show played only 39 previews and 84 regular performances despite having a fair number of positive reviews. Many of Parades best reviews were directed towards the gifted young composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown, who made his Broadway debut. For this show, Brown wrote a dazzling assortment of ballads, comedy numbers, and anthems, in a wide range of styles, from period music to contemporary pop, all wrapped in a distinctive 'sound' of his own.

Parade is the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man who was wrongly convicted of the murder of thirteen-year old Mary Phagan. The musical covers not only the trial, but also dramatizes the love story between Leo and his wife Lucille. The show is basically an historical retelling of the story, but it also subtly examines class and race relations, prejudice, and the South. In the end, Leo's sentence is commuted from the death sentence to life imprisonment, but on the two year anniversary of the little girls death, a mob takes him from his cell and lynches him.

Parade embarked on a National Tour which began in June of 2000, starring David Pittu (Titanic Nat'l tour) as Leo Frank and Andrea Burns (Songs for A New World Original Cast) as Lucille Frank, and featuring Keith Byron Kirk (Broadway's The Civil War, A New Brain) as Jim Conley. The show was to play Chicago September 5-10, but it did not materialize. Later, Metromix magazine writer Chris Jones proclaimed Parade the 'Best Show We Never Saw Here.' - "The superb road production of "Parade" (a Broadway musical by Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown) was supposed to come to the Cadillac Palace Theatre last summer. But the booking was unwisely cancelled, meaning that local audiences never got to experience the most moving, compelling and exquisitely produced show of the year bar none." Dates in Boston (for summer) and St. Louis (Nov. 14-19) failed to happen as well. In April 2001, well after the completion of the national tour, Parade received recognition again as it was nominated for 7 awards in the First annual National Broadway Theatre Awards for touring companies. David Pittu won the Best Actor award for his performance as Leo Frank, pitted against 42 other promising actors from plays and musicals that have toured the United States during the 2000-2001 season.
