     A Jarful of Friends
is a group of people dedicated to supporting the magic of reading to children. Their support helps make A Jarful of Stories possible.

Becoming a member of A Jarful of Friends is easy and simple: Sending in a financial contribution to help support A Jarful of Stories automatically makes you a member of A Jarful of Friends for one year! There are no secret oaths to remember and the official handshake hasn’t been changed in years! Just kidding. All you have to do is send your contribution to:

A Jarful of Friends
c/o Rick Brown
PO Box 941
Kearney, NE 68845

(Please make your check payable to Rick Brown)

Well, that question is a little more difficult to answer. A Jarful of Stories is a low-budget radio program. My goal is to make the show self-supporting so I can keep it independent of other influences. And in order to make the show as attractive as possible to radio stations, I offer it to them without charge.
So far, only WSCL-FM has been kind enough to air A Jarful of Stories. I’m trying to get other stations to air the program but that is a very slow process.
This whole fund raising thing is like a catch-22. Because I work full-time as a school van driver for special needs students, I don’t have much time to work on A Jarful of Stories. The less I work on the show, the farther I get behind. At some point I will need to evaluate whether this is worth it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love making radio and I love doing A Jarful of Stories. I just can’t do it for free anymore. Any contribution you can make  to A Jarful of Stories will help.

Any amount helps. Really. Here are the suggested levels:

WEB BRACER $10

Your name will be listed as a web site sponsor for one week

JAR JAMMER $45

Your name will be included in the broadcast along with a tag line such as "Partial funding for A Jarful of Stories comes from A Jarful of Friends, including Jane Doe who sends birthday greetings to her nephew, Michael. Happy birthday, Frogger. Thank you friends, and thank you Jane for your support." You'll receive a copy of the program on CD.

BUSINESS JAR $120

The name of the business will be broadcast along with a tag line. Please contact me for more information

Is this negotiable? OF COURSE! The goal is to make A Jarful of Stories self-supporting and to provide something missing in public radio today: children’s programming.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? | THE HARD SELL

why_important.JPG (11223 bytes)      Supporting any artistic endeavor is tricky. The bulk of the support for A Jarful of Stories has come from me, Rick Brown, because I’ve been doing the show for free. I have given myself a deadline of August 2004 to make A Jarful of Stories into a business that will break even.
Granted it doesn’t take much overhead to make this show happen. Most of what you hear each week is from my imagination. That’s cheap. I do want to do better, though. I want to feature other writers but I feel I can’t do that unless I can pay them.
I need to change the direction of the funding to external sources. That means grants. Foundations that supply grants need to know that the programs they are supporting are important. That’s where you and A Jarful of Friends come in. If I can show a foundation that I have local support of listeners, they will be more interested in offering their support.
A Jarful of Stories has a small but loyal following. Five dollars here or ten dollars there will help ensure that this program for children will be around for years to come.

Thanks for getting this far into my pitch. Fund raising, as far as I’m concerned, is a necessary evil. I don’t like doing it. I’d much rather make stories and make radio and do all the foolishness I love to do on A Jarful of Stories. But I really need your help to keep this program happening.
Please give me a call if you would like to talk to me in person. My phone number is (308) 338-1265. I would love to hear your thoughts on how to keep A Jarful of Stories alive and kicking.
Or better yet, send a contribution and together we’ll keep Duke the Mouse comfortable and in the style of living he’s accustomed to. Which is not much!
     Thanks.
