There's only one character I could deal with first, and that's our dearest Jareth. He's looking pretty cool, in this picture, isn't he? Well, never mind that, let's get down to business....
JARETH - THE GOBLIN KING:
Tight trousers, eye shdaow that looks like it's been appied with a trwoel, and, confusingly, a whip. Surprisingly, there is actually more to Jareth than that. Jareth, of course, does not exist in the physical world, only Sarah's imagination, and is the personification of all that she needs to get rid of - the longing for her biological mother, the childhood fantasies, the games and costumes. He is Sarah's test. Can she overcome him? She has to.
Jareth is King of the Gobilns, but isn't a goblin himself - dear lord, no, he has to take on a much more appealing form if he's going to be a match for Sarah. So, he chooses the form of David Bowie. Good choice. He lives in the Castle beyond the Goblin city, and is protected by his army of Goblins, and, of course, his Labyrinth. We get the impression that he has designed and created the Labyrinth, and he takes great pride in it's 'unfairness' - such as alleys turning into dead ends before you have time to go back. But, lets be honest, it's no wonder the Labyrinth is so complicated, he has had a lot of time to work on it. In fact, it's probably the only thing that kept him sane before Sarah came into the equation - the fact is he's very bored. The Goblins are hardly ones to make witty conversation, so when Sarah comes, he throws himself into playing the villain. He struts about, messes about time a bit and threatens to turn Hoggle into a Prince - Prince of the Land Of Stench, though.... So that's Jareth covered. Oh, no wait, there's the small matter of him being in love with Sarah to deal with. Does he? Doesn't he? Will they? Won't they? We Labyrinth fans like to think that he really does love Sarah, but who knows? Maybe he's just trying to make her forget about Toby - that is his ultimate goal, after all. Maybe he's just using his charms to get what he wants. But then that brings up another question, what does he want? Toby or Sarah?
