Frightened yet strong. Unloved yet loved. Sarah really is quite an enigma
- a complicated character shaped by the break up of her parents and the introduction of a stepbrother and stepmother into her life.Sarah feels alone. And yet, she has many friends. Well, not friends exactly, more figments of her imagination that are so real to her that perhaps sheshould see someone about it. But Idigress. Every day she loses herself in the fantasies and games that keep her from facing up to the real issues. You know, of her parents breaking up and stuff. They hold her back, and yet at the same time, they make up everything that Sarah is. Every character she has in her mind is formed by something real, something that IS Sarah. That may be something in her bedroom, such as the Fiery soft toy, or a part of her own subconscious, such as Jareth, who is the living, breathing version of her childhood, her insecurities, the dark side of her character. That dark side that lurks inside all of us. In some ways, Sarah is lucky, not many of us get to stand to our dark side and say, once and for all, that it has no power over us. Sarah has that chance. And she succeeds. She has to overcome obstacles to do this, and the main obstacle is she. Well, herself 'stroke' Jareth, if you see what I mean. It all gets very complicated from here on in. But you understand - I know you do, because it�s the same for all of us. There are always times when we can be selfish and contrary. But we deal with it. We have to. What we have to remember is not to let it take over. Concentrate on the positives. There are certain aspects of childhood that would do us good to keep. Innocence, or a fresh way of looking at the world. That is what Sarah gains from the Labyrinth.
