of RI holds the Black Ships Festival in
Newport, RI in July. The Festival celebrates the achievements of
Commodore Matthew C. Perry of Newport for negotiating the Treaty
of
Kanagawa in 1854 with the Edo Shoganate. For further information,

This museum is located in New London, Connecticut. During April 30 to
July 16, 2000, the museum exhibited photos and letters of Chiune
Sugihara, Japanese Consul, who saved many Jewish people, in Kovno,
Lithuania, 1940.

Caption Whitfiield when Manjiro had waited for help in a tiny island
due to a storm. Manjiro chose to follow the caption and arrived in New
Bedford to stay.
Then he went to school near the caption's home.

Nakahama from Tosa, Japan; from a fierce storm as they fished off the
Japanese coast. Manjiro decided to go to the US with the captain,
and the Japanese boy was educated in New Bedford. Today, Tosa and
New Bedford is a sister city.
