Kindergarten Readiness | |||||||||||
| School achievement depends on whether a child is ready for school. Being ready means that children: ~ understand what school is about and why they are there ~ are willing and able to do what is expected ~ follow rules ~ respect the teacher ~ get along with other children ~ work independently Before children start school, it would be helpful if they could do the following: 1. Understand that, in school, they are expected to do what their teacher asks. 2. Be comfortable being away from their parents or caregiver. 3. Know how to wait. 4. Understand that all people have rights and feelings. 5. Be able to work together with other children on a task. 6. Sit quietly and play for awhile, concentrate on a task or listen to a story. 7. Play cooperatively with other children. 8. Know a few ways to deal with conflicts. 9. Dress themselves. Snap, zip and button clothing. 10. Use the bathroom independently. 11. Continue to work on a task even when it becomes difficult. 12. Finish a task before starting something else. 13. Be able to clean up after themself. |
