| * Separation anxiety is part of the normal process for all of us ... adults and children alike. One of the most important things you can do is be certain that YOU are ready to leave your child. Communicate your enthusiasm, not your anxiety. Visit the classroom and take a walk around the grounds a few days ahead of time so your child wil be familiar. Prepare for the kindergarten experience together - shop for clothes, buy supplies. Always say "goodbye". Establish and retain a ritual at the end of the school day. * Getting the proper amount of sleep is just as important to a child's health as diet and exercise. Some ways you can help your child get adequate sleep include: ~ set a regular bed time and stick to it ~ avoid caffeine products like cola and chocolate close to bedtime ~ don't let your child fall asleep by the television - the noise can keep him/her from a deep, restful sleep ~ develop a sleep ritual - a warm bath, a bedtime story - to make a relaxing transition to sleep * If your child lags behind in some areas, don't worry. Remember that children grow and develop at different rates. However, if you have questions or think your child is lagging too far behind, talk to your pediatrician, or a professional at your child's school. If a child has a disability or other problem it is important to get the right help as soon as possible. |
