BLACK CLIFFS & BLACKBIRDS
part II: Duxford air museum

TO PART I
Part II of my holiday was not about traveling or doing the wild thing, it was dedicated to planes. Since i have taken up moddeling recently, it was evident I had to see some real planes. A guy who calls himself a friend -I am beginning to learn that this term covers a lot of evil- showed me a booklet about a museum in Engeland I had to visit; Duxford, just south of Cambridge. Now as I explained before, I was hoping for a cheap holliday this year, and since England is not sheap by any standard, I had no intention of going to England. Needless to say he won. So I went to England, and I dedicated one week to visiting Duxford and Hannants, the non plus ultra in selling models... Here are some pictures I took in this second week.
Ok, this is not Duxford, and it is not about planes even. These are 2 airship hangers at Cardington. Huge hangers...
This is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Since i have a kit of this plane planned as my next excercise in modelbuilding, this was the main goal of visiting Duxford. If ever there was a plane I was impressed by, it was this one (flying at over Mach 3, and at over 80.000 feet). And I never thought I would see one in real life...
Another 'black bird', although not THE Blackbird: the U-2 spyplane.
Meet Droopy, the rather happy flyingboat: a Short Sutherland.
The war room in Duxford. From rooms like these, the Battle over Britain was conducted.
As usual, others had to realise all this planning and managing.
Others like these, a Hawker Hurricane.
A Sabre F 86-A, one of the early jet fighters, taxing and taking off from Duxford.
And here is my personal adventure: For a man who has been flying kites for all those years, who has made sculptures depicting Icarus and who builds model planes, I have done remarkable little flying. Actualy, I have not been in a plane once.
And this time, it was time to change that. For 25 pounds, one could see Duxford from the air. In an plane dating back to the '30...
Meet the plane of my maiden trip: a De Havilland Dragon Rapides.
As promised, Duxford from the air...
Cambridgeshire...
No bullet proof doors between passengers and the cockpit here
I have been in the air...
