“Preparation for creating a work of art often involves either a journey into the wilds of nature or to the inner meditative state. The work emerges within the context of an experience not unlike meditation. Consciousness is expanded through surrender to the inner. Inspiration rises to the surface through the filters of spiritual awareness, passionate life experience, deep feeling and visceral impulses. Any number of stimuli may trigger the heart to open, the mind to receive and the hands to create. It might be emotive music, the play of light on water, a particular scent or sound borne by a summer breeze, a loving touch, a significant word or phrase overheard on the street. A fleeting expression of feeling or a memory flash may trigger the call to create. Natural stimuli are abundant in nature. For this reason, I prefer to work outside. The weather dictates when I work in my home studio. A piece is seldom completed at first sitting. Some evolve over a period of months. Most are completed in a few days or weeks. Form, colour choice, and style take their cue from intuitive signals while being surrendered to the creative state.”
“The ‘egos off’ surrendering to the muse allows the creator to enter into an intimate relationship with the work. In changing states of consciousness from regular to creative awareness, the artist’s personal filters are set aside. The work is now open ‘to be what it wants to be’ for the artist and for others. Without knowing why, one is invigorated by and drawn toward the work. By extension then, fine-art commissions become windows into the very heart and soul of the individual or family. Non-commissioned ‘spontaneous’ works become ‘windows-in-waiting’ for those who would dive into their mysteries. Authenticity of creative process frees our perceptual pathways, enabling us to plumb the depths of what the work and its origins have to offer.”
“The process of creating commercial images and private commissions follows this path. The client is seen as the primary wellspring of resource. A revealing series of exploratory and feeling conversations sets the stage. Where possible, the client is met at home and in the work place, so as to connect intimately with the person and/or the business culture behind the artistic objective. The work begins to emerge from this ‘seeding’ process. A relationship develops between inspiration and creative partners, birthing a work of fine art, or a graphic design. A poem may also emerge, expanding the perceptual horizons of the artistic piece. A company’s heart-centered marketing image, is energized by the authenticity of its creative process. The design’s integrity attracts trade that has integrity. The authenticity of the final image lends integrity to its presentation. It is rendered capable of magnetizing to it, the attentions of worthy clients, customers, business and staff.”
“Each creation is a reflection of what moves us, on the inner and outer levels. It may be the embodiment of a healing process, the manifestation of archetypal energy, a catalyst to business growth, a gift It of communal revelation and/or Divine intent. In the end, I create because I have said yes to the call.”
