| (If you feel there is any inaccurate information in this small bio, please E-mail me) Full Name- Janet Damita Jo Jackson Birthplace- Gary, Indiana Birthdate- May 16th, 1966 _____After being hand picked by a man in the audience of her family's TV variety show, Janet started her solo career as an actress, playing Penny on the TV show Good Times at the age of 9. From then on, she appeared on A Different Kind Of Family, Diff'rent Strokes and FAME. She started her music career at the age of 16 releasing her self-titled Janet Jackson album. It didn't do very well, nor did her second album, Dream Street. She then picked up her bags and headed to Minnesota to become independant and to stay away from her family for a bit. There she worked with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and recorded Control. The album was a huge success in 1986. It was #1 on two of the Billboard charts and delivered FIVE TOP 5 singles, including the #1 When I Think Of You. It went 5x Platinum (5 million units sold) in the U.S. and it made Janet at the time the youngest most successful music star since Stevie Wonder, only at the age of 19. _____ On my birthday, September 19th of 1989, Janet released the incredible Rhythm Nation 1814 album. This also hit the #1 mark on two Billboard charts and delivered a record breaking SEVEN TOP 5 singles including FOUR #1 hits: Miss You Much, Escapade, Black Cat and Love Will Never Do (Without You). It went 6x Platinum in the U.S. and the Rhythm Nation World Tour became the most successful debut tour of all time. _____In 1993, Janet released Janet., one of the best selling albums by a female artist in all time, selling over 14 million copies world-wide. From this album were the #1 hits Thats The Way Love Goes and Again, from the movie Poetic Justice in which she starred in and debuted #1 at the box office its first weekend. This album as well topped two of Billboard's charts at #1 and was the first female album to ever debut at #1, selling over 200,000 units in its first week. Thats The Way Love Goes is the 2nd highest debuting single on the R&B charts, staying at #1 for 8 weeks (2nd to Scream, her duet with her brother Micheal). This album also delivered Four Top 5 singles. _____In 1995, Janet released Design Of A Decade, a compilation of all her hits from 1986 to 1996. It sold over 4 million copies in the U.S. and made it to #3 on Billboard. She delivered two new hits with this album, Runaway (which went to #3) and Twenty Foreplay (One of my all time favorite tracks). This album was a true gift to old and new fans alike. _____In 1997, Janet released The Velvet Rope, her most personal album ever. It also debuted at #1 on the charts, selling nearly 300,000 units its first week and last I heard has gone triple platinum in the U.S. alone, while selling over 7 million worldwide. She worked with the rapper Q-Tip on her first released single Got Til Its Gone and soon after delivered yet another #1 hit, Together Again. Her third single, I Get Lonely stayed high on the R&B charts for months and Go Deep went to #1 on the Dance charts. Her Velvet Rope World Tour made it in the top 10 most successful tours of 1998 and raised an enourmous amount of money for the children's charity America's Promise. The VHS release of the tour live on HBO here in New York City topped the Video charts as well. _____Between and after these albums, Janet has worked with some very popular music stars. She recorded a song with Luther Vandross entitled The Best Things In Life Are Free for the Mo' Money soundtrack. Her duet with her brother Micheal, Scream, went to #1 and was the highest debuting R&B single ever at its time. She teamed up with Shaggy to record Luv Me, Luv Me for the How Stella Got Her Groove Back soundtrack and has recently worked with Busta Rhymes on his smash hit What's It Gonna Be?! which ruled the nation's radio airwaves, as well as working with Blackstreet on Boyfriend/Girlfriend. She has done a duet with Elton John called I Know The Truth from his Broadway musical Aida soundtrack. The song was not officially released as a single but I see it as one of her finest pieces of work. |
