He was the 1st Post-Master, build a saw and gin mill, school, general store (which he ran) and he build the church for his wife. The Towns of TOM and AMERICA are on the Oklahoma state maps in the very southeast corner of the state in the middle of the "Ouchita National Forest." TOM is 5 miles from the Arkansas State line. AMERICA is on the railroad line. Little remains of the towns themselves. The town of America, Oklahoma was named for her.

The town of Tom, Oklahoma was named for him. The town formally came into being in 1916 when a post office was established in Tom Stewart's store with him as the first postmaster. The community was thus named for him.
Following the death of Thomas Stewart on September 30, 1927 The McCurtain Democrat newspaper ran the following eulogy: "Tom was stopped with sorrow Thursday afternoon when the news was wafted over the village that Mother Stewart and her husband Tom had passed away, the later having been in bad health for over a year. They were taken sick with malaria on Sunday night before. On Monday morning their home physician was called and attention was given their case which at that time was not alarming. Each day they grew weaker with consulting physicians attending, until Thursday afternoon it was noticed that Mother Stewart was suddenly unconscious. A physician was hurriedly called and he pronounced a blood vessel had broken on the brain. And the husband was also in a serious condition. They continued to grow weaker throughout the night. Mother Stewart's spirit passed away most peacefully the following morning at 6:00 AM and Mr. Stewart likewise at 12:00 noon the same day, each passing over the river to the great beyond within six hours of each other; neither knowing that the other was going. They were laid side by side and those viewing them said they were so natural they looked as though they were taking a quiet slumber. They will be missed more than usual because they were pioneers. The town of Tom, Oklahoma was named for him and the town of America, Oklahoma was named for her". One of Tom Stewart's grandsons tells the story of the time that Tom got hijacked and the hijacker was rather disappointed. Tom carried two wallets with him and the hijacker got the empty one.

The newsletter of the McCurtain County Genealogical Society for March 1992 carried an article written by Patsy Stevens on The Stewart Family. It gave some of the history of the family as they lived in Tom Oklahoma. The McCurtain Democrat newspaper on Thursday, October 6, 1927 ran the following obituary:"Mrs America Stewart, age 71 years, died at her home in Tom, September 30 at 6 AM. Her husband, Thomas Stewart, 70 years old, died at 12 o'clock noon September 30 from the shock of the death of his wife. The double funeral service of this pioneer couple was held in the Bryan cemetery on Saturday, October 1, 1927 at 3:00 PM. The service was in charge of Rev. M L Matthews and Rev. Applebury. Tom Oklahoma was named for Mr. Stewart and America Oklahoma was named for Mrs. Stewart. Nothing remains of the once flourishing town of America which was located on the Frisco Railroad four miles from the Oklahoma-Arkansas border. The town was founded in 1903 by William Spencer who had come to the Indian Territory the previous year and settled at Goodwater, six miles to the northwest. Realizing the advantage of being situated near the railroad, Spencer moved to the new site. The town was named for America Stewart, wife of the first postmaster, Tom Stewart. The post office began operating on July 24, 1903. And then came the Great Depression which was the beginning of the end for America, Oklahoma. There was no longer profit in cotton farming and most of the residents moved to other towns or states. The post office closed on February 15, 1944.

Obituary of James Edward Stewart James Edward Stewart 91 of Tom, Oklahoma died Monday, September 3, 1979 in the Oak Grove Nursing Home of Idabel, Oklahoma. He was born August 26, 1888 in Arkansas. He was a member of the Baptist Church.. Survivors include on daughter, Evelyn O'Berry of Chino, California; four step daughters, Lucille Garrett & Virginia Hoover, both of Tom, Orpha Bossons of St. Petersburg, Florida and Freda Holmes of Largo, Florida and two step sons, C. L. Groves of St. Petersburg and Dr. Barney Groves of Richmond, Virginia. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 PM on Saturday in the Tom Baptist Church, with the Rev. Miles Wesner officiating. Arrangements and burial in the Tom Cemetery are under the direction of Coffey-Ruiz Funeral Home.

"In March 1990 Cleo wrote: "The Stewarts came from McNairy county Tennessee. My grandfather was William Shepard Stewart, married Susan Springer. I don't know when most of them came to Texas, but I think that my father was about 21 years old. Anyhow, Shepard Stewart had a sister, Malissa, who had a son, Taylor Goforth. Don't have the details but most of the family settled in a community named Goforth out from Buda in Hays county Texas. Incidentally, my father, at one time worked for Taylor Goforth who had a truck line (wagons & mules). Daddy loaded up at Goforth in the morning, drove to Austin, unloaded his wares, spent the night at a wagon yard on South Congress Ave., loaded up and back to Goforth. Some of Taylor Goforth's family moved to this area. A granddaughter married a Bell boy and lived way out from Dilley. It was she who hosted a Goforth-Stewart reunion (bar-b-que) at her home sometime between 1936-38. There were four Stewart brothers who came to Dilley around 1906 - Ira, Henry, Robert and Frank. Ira died in 1912; the others had rather long lives. The five elderly people in the front row of the photograph were Uncle Henry, my father, Aunt Sarah (sister) and Uncle Frank Smith of Buda and Uncle Frank Stewart. The boy by Uncle Henry is Roy Newman Jr. (Ira's grandson). By Uncle Frank were Dotsy Newman, Linda Gill. The tall dark haired boy at left on second row was W R Weathersby. Behind Daddy was Tate, Lex's first wife. Behind Lex was Dee Stewart. I don't think that May or Stella were there."

Obituary of James Edward Stewart James Edward Stewart 91 of Tom, Oklahoma died Monday, September 3, 1979 in the Oak Grove Nursing Home of Idabel, Oklahoma. He was born August 26, 1888 in Arkansas. He was a member of the Baptist Church.. Survivors include on daughter, Evelyn O'Berry of Chino, California; four step daughters, Lucille Garrett & Virginia Hoover, both of Tom, Orpha Bossons of St. Petersburg, Florida and Freda Holmes of Largo, Florida and two step sons, C. L. Groves of St. Petersburg and Dr. Barney Groves of Richmond, Virginia. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 PM on Saturday in the Tom Baptist Church, with the Rev. Miles Wesner officiating. Arrangements and burial in the Tom Cemetery are under the direction of Coffey-Ruiz Funeral Home.

In addition to his wife, Vergie, of the home, Pierce is survived by two sons, Phil Pierce of Dallas, and Jerrell Pierce of Tom; one daughter, Reba Harbert of Bryan, TX; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
