States this “Much confused and erroneous information has been passed around and published about this family. Among the misconceptions, the one most often seen is that the immigrant ancestor was John, the Earl of Tyrone in No. Ire, wife Margaret McDonald, and a 2nd wife Esther LaPeirrre in SC. Such claims have been completely refuted. THE EARL OF TYRONE IS THE NEIL FAMILY. THERE IS NO PROOF THAT A HEARD HAS BEEN RELATED TO THE NEIL FAMILY OR EVER A EARL OF ANYWHERE.

Also, county records show that three of those said to be John’s sons are ACTUALLY the sons of

#1 Charles Heard, blacksmith, who died about 1748 at Hardware River, Albmarle Co Va.

Those sons of #1 Charles were

#2 Stephen died 1774 Pittsylvania Co VA.

#3 John died in 1787 Wilkes Co. Ga;

# 4 Charles JR died 1797 Wilkes Co GA.

Note John Heard with wife Esther LaPierrr of SC could have no close connection to these Heards.

John was a Jacobite rebel deported from England, arriving in Charleston in 1716. Age-wise he would be a different geneeration than the father of Charles, Stephen and George Heard of PA and Va.

The first generation of this Heard family seen in America, by authoritative records found so far is

CHARLES SR(The blacksmith), STEPEHN AND their probable brothers GEORGE(a baker) AND UNKNOWN.

Records indicate that upon immigration, Our Heard family first lived in and near Lancaster Co,. PA.

It should be pointed out that many early immigrants to Colonial PA. As well as to the other Colonies, either did not seek or did not have recorded title to the lands they settled until years later, perhaps not at all if they left the area.

We have proof that a Stephen Sr was at Sadsbury before 1727; he died there with a will dated 11 Oct 1756. Among his will-named children was Thomas, who appears to have later lived in Ninety Six District SC.. We may also see records in Lnacaster Co Pa for Heards who may be Charles JR found on 1740 Taxed in New London Twp and for George Sr and JR and John possibly son of George Sr.

These records and the connection of the Abbleville Co. SC family were discovered by Charles R Clemson of Lancaster,Pa. In nearby Salisbury of Lancaster Co. PA., was Thomas Falkner by 1714, later father –in-law of Stephen. The family of Charles SR (said to our Stephen father) moved to Goochland Co Va. by 1741 joined by George’s group a little later. The traditional location “Hanover Co. VA.

The earliest writings so far found about the Sadsbury-Albemarle Heard family tradition include a paper by Eliza Jane Heard Wootten b 1825 d 1893 and a letter by her brother Dr Falkener Heard b 1828 d 1900. They both wrote that the family came from Co. Tyrone, Ire to America 1720s, but gave NO NAME FOR THE IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR. They also commented on a very old record of this family reported to have contained information back 1420. Family members had talked about this record, saying where it had been kept and who had a copy it. It was said to have been partly in Gaelic and partly in English, as they had land in both places, living first in England before moving to Ireland. Dr Falkner Heard comment that 200 names had been counted in the record. If part of that record was in Gaelic, it would indicate the family was in Ireland for a long time, probably from 1620ca. We know from writings for Julius W, Lliy, Heard researcher, that this “lost or mislaid” record was being sought by 1906.

JOHN HEARD: John HEARD Birth: Abt. 1699 Of, , Ireland. Was NOT BORN the the Earl of Tyrone in North Ireland. This title came into being when he married MARGARET MC DONALD. She could be related to Neil family through the McDonald family Neil but this DOES NOT MAKE JOHN HEARD A EARL OF ANYTHING!!!!

William McCausland, (1709-81), served as major in the Lancaster county militia. He was born in Ireland and is buried in Leacock, Pa., where the old grave stone has been restored. William McCausland, Jr., (1755-1821), served as an ensign [p.162] in the Fourth Company, First Battalion of Pennsylvania militia, 1780. He was born and died in Lancaster county. Gabriel Davis, (1728-1813), was elected to the General Assembly, 1775, and was a member of the convention, 1776, to establish a State constitution. He was born in Lancaster county and is buried at Compass. Zaccheus Piersol, (1754-1804), served as corporal, 1776, under Capt. Alexander Martin for the New Jersey campaign. Zaccheus Davis, (1710-87), was appointed, 1774-5, on the Committee of Observation of Lancaster county. James Clemson, (1727-92), was a delegate to the convention, 1774 and 1775. He was a member of the Committee of Safety, 1775, and represented Lancaster in the Legislature, 1777-9. Zaccheus Davis (1710-87) was a member of the Committee of Observation for Lancaster County, 1774-75, where he was born. Gabriel Davis (1728-1813) was elected to the General Assembly, 1775, and was a member of the convention, 1776, to establish a State Constitution. He was born in Lancaster County and is buried in Compass, Pa. Stephen Heard (1713-97) signed the Association Test and served in the Lancaster County militia. He was born in Ireland; died in Lancaster County. Zaccheus Piersol (1754-1804) served as corporal, 1776, under Capt. Alexander Martin for the Jersey campaign. He died in Compass, Pa. James Clemson (1727-92) was a delegate to the convention, 1774-75. He was a member of the Committee of Safety, 1775, and represented Lancaster in the Legislature, 1777-79. He was born in Lancaster County. George Test (1759-95) served as private, 1780, in Capt. Ephraim Pennington's company, 1st battalion, York County, Pennsylvania militia. He died in York County. He married 2nd MARY VEAZY and married 1st ELIZABETH NAPIER FITZPATRICK August 02, 1767 in Goochland County, Virginia, daughter of JOSEPH FITZPATRICK and MARTHA NAPIER. She was born 1750 in Virginia, and died September 29, 1790 in Georgia Burial: Heard Cemetery (Green County), Georgia.

Notes for THOMAS HEARD: Thomas Heard moved from Fluvanna County, Virginia to Goodland County, Virginia and then moved to South Carolina. Thomas then went to Georgia where he had his wife settled in Greene County. They lived on Richland Creek before settling in Town Creek, 8 miles from Greensboro, Georgia. They died on their plantation.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR:

Captain in Revolutionary War, Grave in Greene County is marked DAR Member "Society of the Cincinnati." Revolutionary War - Virginia Line; his name appears on the list showing "Arrangement of Virginia Line, 11/1783." His date of commission was February 18, 1781. He was a prisoner of war.

He was also a member of the Society of the Cincinatti which is a Hereditary Order founded by George Washington and the American and French Officers who served together in the Revolutionary War. He may have served in Washington's Own Regiment.

Thomas Heard is not mentioned in the will of Stephen Heard dated November 24, 1774, Pittsylvania County Deed and it is proven that Thomas is the son of Stephen and Mary Faulkner Heard.

Quoting from rev. Dow H. Hard's research dated June 9, 1957..."Thomas (Son of Stephen), was born in Virginia in 1742 and lived in Virginia at the time of the American Revolution.

His will mentioned "troop bounties" and "land warrants." These are presumed to have been made in payment for military service.

He made his last Will and Testiment on June 3, 1807. His Will was filed at Greensboro (Greene County), Georgia. Thomas' grave in the Heard Cemetery located on Cold Springs Road in Greene County, Georgia (north of Greensboro and Fishing Creek) is marked by the DAR and Order of the Cincinnati. He is buried beside his first wife, Elizabeth Napier Fitzpatrick, and there are headstones. Thomas suffered from Kidney Stones for the 10 years before his death. Kidney Stones were referred to "Gravel" in medical terms of that time.

THE WILL OF THOMAS HEARD, Greene County Georgia, Will Book E, page 44 In the Name of God Amen, I, THOMAS HEARD, being of weak body but in perfect mind and memory do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth, (viz) I desire all my lawful debts to be paid, I then give to my beloved WIFE, MARY HEARD, that part or portion of property willed to her by her Father, James Veasy, also her two beds and furniture together with all other household furniture and that to be made as good as it was when she came into my family, also her bridle and saddle and a good horse at my decease. Also a likely country born negro boy between the age of twelve and twenty years, the negro to be purchased out of that part of my estate willed to my two youngest sons, George and Faulkner, within two years of my Decease, also she is to have a good hand put in her possession until the other is purchased and delivered unto her. I also give her two cows. I lend her the two east rooms of my dwelling house with a small house near it, Together with that part of my plantation lying Eastwardly from the house above the lane during her life or widowhood -- Otherwise if she should choose to give possession of the house and plantation, she is to have thirty dollars paid her annually by my two youngest sons, George and Faulkner, for the above time mentioned.

I give my DAUGHTER, CATY WATTS, formerly CATY STOCKS, and her children by said Stocks, a negro woman named Aggey and her children, and also a negro woman named Chelsea and her increase and five Shillings Sterling it being the whole of her Legacy.

I give to my SON, ABRAHAM HEARD, a negro woman named Judy now in his possession and her children -- I give to the children of my DAUGHTER, MARY COOK, eight negros namely Judy, Billy, Lydia, Selah, Andrew, George, Boson, & Tom and their increase, and if my daughter, Mary Cook becomes a widow, she is to have one equal part of said negroes with her children, the negroes to go into the possession of my two youngest sons George and Faulkner and to remain there till the coming of age of the eldest of said children, then the negroes are to go into the possession of my Executors and all the profits thence arising from said negroes is to be distributed among the children at the discression of my Executors at the coming of (age of) the Eldest of said chidren. They are to have such negroes as my Executors may think proper and so at the coming of age of all said children till the youngest one that she has or may have hereafter and then my will is that there be an equal division of said Negroes agreeable to the value of them when they received them.

I give my DAUGHTER, BETSY WHATLEY formerly Betsy Peeples, a negro woman named Rachel and her increase and five Shillings Sterling it being the whole of her Legacy.

I give to my DAUGHTER, SALLY WHATLEY, one negro boy named Frank and one negro woman named Jenny and her child.

I give to my SON, JOSEPH HEARD, a negro boy named Jo, and one negro girl named Nell and her increase, also one hundred and twenty-acres of land including whereon he now lives already laid out. I give my SON, THOMAS HEARD, one negro woman named Lucy and her two children John and Fanny. I give to my SON, WOODSON HEARD, a negro woman named Sarah and her two children Grabiel and Davy, also one hundred acres of land adjoining Joseph Heard as already laid out. I give my SON GEORGE HEARD, one hundred acres of land as already laid out. I give my SON, FAULKNER HEARD the whole of my my land including where I now live but not to be possession of that part allotted to my wife until the afore mentioned term expires.

I give to my four sons, JOSEPH HEARD, THOMAS HEARD, GEORGE HEARD AND FAULKNER HEARD all of my State Troop Bounties and other land warrants to be equally divided according to quality.

I also give to my two youngest sons, George and Faulkner Heard all of my Estate not heretofore willed, to be equally divided at my Decrease or at the coming of age of my youngest son Faulkner Heard.

I do hereby appoint Abraham Heard, Joseph Heard and Woodson Heard my lawful Executors of this my last Will and Testament -- Witness Whereof -- I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third Day of June Eighteen hundred and Seven.

STEPHEN HEARD (JOHN,CHARLES,STEPHEN)3 was born November 1740 in Hanover County, Virginia, and died November 15, 1815 in Elbert County, Georgia Burial: Family Cemetery at Heardmont. He married 1st JANE GARMANY and married 2nd ELIZABETH "Betsey." DARDEN4 August 25, 1785, daughter of GEORGE DARDEN and MARTHA BURCH. She was born Bet. 1765 - 1766 in Virginia, and died June 05, 1848. Notes for JANE GARMANY: Jane and their son were driven from their home by the Tories and died of exposure. Notes for STEPHEN HEARD: When the Assembly named Richad Howley as a delegate to the Continental Congress, it expected the executive power to devote upon Goerge Wells, president of the Exectuive Council and a leading radical. The fiery Wells, however, was killed in a duel by James Jackson on February 16, 1780. Two days later Stephen Heard of Wilkes County replaced Wells as president of the Executive Council. When Howley finally departed for Philadelphia, Heard became Georgia's chief executive, acting as governor from May 24, 1780 to August 18, 1781.

Heard was born in Hanover County, Virginia in November, 1740, the son of John and Bridgett Carroll Heard. The Heard family had lived in Virginia about twenty years, having migrated from Ireland around 1720. According to historian R. J. Massey, Heard's education was cut short when he joined George Washington's regiment in the French and Indian War. Promoted to the rank of Captain, Heard and Washington became lifetime friends. In 1759 John Heard moved his family to Georgia, settling forty-five miles above Augusta on Fishing Creek. in 1760 Stephen Heard was granted 150 acres near the mouth of Little River. John Heard and his two sons, living on what was still Indian land until 1773, built Heard's Fort on Fishing Creek in 1773-1774.

During the Revolutionary war, Stephen Heard supported the Whig cause and fought under Elijah Clark at the Battle of Kettle Creek, where the Whigs stopped Colonel James Boyd's invasion. Heard, like many settlers in back country Georgia suffered abuses from the enemy. While he was attending a military conference in Augusta, his wife Jane and their adopted daughter were driven from their home in the midst of winter and subsequently died from exposure. Before the siege of Augusta in September, 1780, Heard along with his father and brother were captured by Tories and imprisoned in Augusta. During Heard's confinement a faithful slave, "Mammy Kate," visited him twice a week. She brough him food, washed his clothes, and, if tradtional lore can be accepted, enabled him to escape. Supposedly the stout Mammy Kate concealed Heard in the large basket used to carry clothes and carried him unnoticed through the British lines.

As governor of Georgia, Heard inherited an impossible situation. Nineteenth century historian George White stated that Heard 'did all in his power to inspire the desponding people with hope." But, regardless of his efforts, there was little hope at this time. British forces occupied or controlled much of the state, including Savannah and the coastal rea. Only Wilkes County and a part of Richmond County remained under Whig authority, and those areas were raided periodically by Tories and Indians. From May 1780 until July 1781 the whereabouts and actions of the state government are conjectural. No assembly was elected and the governor apparently moved from place to place to avoid capture by the British. It seems certain that Heard fled into North Carolina as the backcountry of Georgia and South Carolina was ravaged by war. In reality, state government exisited in name only. As Kenneth Coleman, the chief historian of the Revolution of Georgia, observed: "Truly, state government was in default and it was every man for himself in Whig Georgia." Following the recapture of Augusta, a new assembly met there in August, 1781. Heard served as a member of this legislature and the Executive Council until he resigned in August, 1782.

After the War, Heard settled down to the quiet life of a prosperous farmer. He built a beautiful home in a forest near Washignton which he called Heardmont. A model of beauty and comfort with plastered walls and solid mahogany furniture imported from London, it was reputedly the finest home in Georgia north of Augusta. His landholdings were expanded with generous land grants form the sate for his civil and military service during the Revolution. In 1784 he received grants that totaled 6,850 acres, mostly in what became Elbert County. At the itme of his death he owned twenty four slaves. In 1785 he married Elizabeth Darden of Virginia and they had nine children. Three of their sons were named for the first three American Presidents.

Heard remained active in politics, serving several terms in the Assembly as a representative form Wilkes County and Elbert County. (in 1790 his area of Wilkes County became part of the new Elbert County.) He served as foreman of the first grand jury to convene in Elbert County, helped select the site of Elberton, and for many years as a justice of the county court. Heard also served as a representative to the Georgia consitutional convention in 1795. A lover of books, he accumulated an excellent library and was a pratron of th Moravian school for young women at Salem, North Carolina, and a trustee of the academy at Washington, Georgia.

Heard died at his home on November 15, 1815 and was buried in the family cemetery at Heardmont. Fifteen years after his death, a county in the western part of the state was named in his honor. On his monument at Heardmont is the inscription: "An honest man is the noblest work of God."

Notes for ABRAM HEARD: Abram and Nancy Heard left Georgia and moved to McMinn County, Tennessee. Abram took up 1,280 acres of land on the Savannah River in the spring of 1822, but in June he was killed by an Indian, and his widow received the land grant. The farm is now called Savannah Farm.

While Early and Margaret Heard only lived in Douglas County a relatively short time, many,many of their descendants lived there an still do today.

Douglas County Missouri History and families has Jeremiah and family list in it. The book has Douglas County Veterans listing many Heard there. Jeremiah children married in the McIntosh family and Coats family and they can be found in there. The book states that many of children's children can be still found here. I hoping to meet some soon.

Douglas County Cemetery book list the Heard graves as follows: Shiloh Cemetery: Rachel Heard b June 13, 1875 d Apr 24 1888. Note she was the wife of John Huston Heard.Her grave can be found near the McIntosh family for that was her maiden. These graves connot be found, but were there when Mr G. C Johnson was caretaker back in the 30s. "He stated there are over 100 graves which do not have markers" Nancy Heard b 19 Aug 1862 d 8 June 1895; Nathaniel b 19 Aug 1862 d 22 Nov 1865. I think that Polly the daughter of Jesse and Margaret Hose Heard is my Mary Meador Heard who married Mr. Kilmer.

1 Jesse came from Greene Co.. GA ca 1811 maybe a little later to Bledsoe Co. because that was the only county at that time.

2. Jesse didn't leave the area the county lines just kept changing so his daughter Mary could have met someone in the Georgia to married there or

3. There was James and Jacob Kilmer on a tax list in 1836. Mary is at the right age to get married. My family tradition says Mary’s husband as a James or John Kilmer.

4. My Mary Meadors Heard Kilmer was born 1811 in GA/TN.

5. I have copy of land deed for Benjamin Kilmer buying land with Jeremiah Early Heard who may be related t to Mary through marriage. The date for this deed is 1854. I need to find out if anyone knows who brought the land after Jeremiah and his family moved to Missouri.

6 Mary Meador Heard Kilmer had two sons who are have the same names as the sons of Jesse and Margaret Heard sons Jeremiah Early and Byram.

7. Jeremiah and Byram is a name that runs in the Meadors family.
