Hoskins Creek to his sister, Elizabeth Wheeler. RICHARD GREGORY SR. patented over 1700 a. in New Kent Co and a small acreage in Rappahannock Co.

On 22 October 1663 John Gregory received a land patent of 1200 acres in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, on the South side of the Rappahannock River on the Easternmost side of a creek called Hodgeskins his creek, adjacent to James Williamson, 600 acres of which was formerly patented by William Johnson on 10 March 1653 and assigned to John Gregory. This land patent itself cannot be found. Reference to it is found on the repatent of the same land to John Gregory on 20 October 1684. (Patent Book 7, page 414)

On 27 Feb. 1665/66 William Akres received a 592 acre land patent in Old Rappahannock Co., VA that was on the main branch of Piscattaway Creek "above the land of Mr. John Grigory. "Beginning at Mr. Grigory's corner white oak at the mouth of a branch running by the said Grigory's land upon the branch to a Spanish oak corner by a branch." ("John Gregory of Old Rappahannock County, Virginia" by D. C. Beaham "John Grigory acquired another 300 acres in Old Rappahannock Co. Va. by deed from Thomas Gaines and wife Margaret on 4 Nov 1667. A John Gregory purchased 100 acres from Edmund Pagett on 4 Oct 1672. John and Gregory and wife Elizabeth then sold unspecified property to Edmund Pagett on 26 feb 1673/4.)

On 16 April 1666, Jno Grigory of Hoskins Creeke in Rappa, planter, for love and affection for Thomas Edmondson of same, "my Son in Law", gave 8 head of cattle, by names of Gentle, Tydy, Marygold, Prymrose, Violett, and others. On 4 Nov. 1667 Thomas Gaines and Margaret, his wife, deeded 300 acres of his 1030 acre land patent in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, to John Grigory "of said county, Planter." This deed was recorded on 6 November 1667. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 1663-1666, page 117] Witnesses to this deed were Thomas Edmondson and John Waggener tabOn 6 April 1667 John Soaper (Soper) deeded 200 acres that Soaper purchased of Edward Hudson to Hugh Meader (or Meades). Recorded 1 January 1667/68. The Witness was John Grigory (sic). [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 3, page 137]

On 17 August 1667 John Grigory (and Samuel Parry) witnessed a deed of land in Rappahannock Co., VA, from Thomas Edmondson and Ann Edmondson to Neill Peterson. The land was located on the south side of Piscatacon. Recorded 14 November 1667. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 3, page 116]

1667: Hugh Meads/Meades bought 100 a. S side Piscattaway Cr in 1667 (Rapp.Co Dd Bk 5 p 349); he also had a grant of 200 a. N side Piscattaway Cr which he shared with JOHN GRIGORY 4 Oct 1675. He died about 1684 when his 2 sons were yet minors; Hugh the younger was bound out to Thos.Harper who died, then to Wm.Leake (Rapp.Co Court Order Bk 1 p 136). (ref: OUR MEADOR FAMILIES IN COLONIAL AMERICA)

On 26 February 1673/74 biJohn Gregory and Elizabeth, his wife, acknowledged a deed of unknown acreage to Edmond Pagett in Old Rappahannock Co., VA. The witnesses were Theophilus Wheale and Mary Whitechurch. The Acknowledgment was recorded on 15 June 1674. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 5, page 295] Both John and Elizabeth Gregory gave a Power of Attorney to Thomas Gouldman in connection with this Acknowledgment, John's dated 26 May 1674 and Elizabeth's dated 6 May 1674. The combined witnesses to the Powers of Attorney were William Jewel, John Eastin, Elizabeth Browne and John Robert. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 5, page 295 or 296).

On 1 March 1670/71 John Gregory witnessed an acknowledgment of Robert Bishop of the Parish of Farnham in the County of Rappahannock involving Robert Bishop's deed of 200 acres to Eme Johnson. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 4, page 403] This Deed was acknowledged on 1 March 1670/71.

On 21 November 1671 John Proper of Sittengbourne Parish signs a Power of Attorney appointing Mr. John Gregory to acknowledge his deed for 600 acres to Henry Thackery. The document is witnessed by John Gregory, Jr. This document was recorded on 18 April 1672. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 4, page 526]

Note: This proves that John Gregory, Sr., was still alive on 21 November 1671

On 4 October 1672 Edmund Pagett deeded 100 acres to John Grigory in Old Rappahannock Co., VA on John Weirs' Creek (aka Mill Creek). This land was adjacent to Thomas Thomlin and McGuffee. The witnesses were Thomas Robarts and Francis Brown. This deed was recorded on 6 November 1672. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 5, page 67]

Note: There is some question whether this John Gregory is the same person as John Gregory, Sr., as this land is not connected with Hoskins Creek or Piscataway Creek and there is a suggestion from a 1683 deed involving a John Gregory, deceased, and his minor child, John Gregory, that there may have been two sets of John Gregory father and sons in Rappahannock Co., VA in the 1670s

(On 30 August 1676, Neale Peterson and Eleanor, his wife, deeded this 200 acres to James Fullerton. The deed says that it lies on the lands of John Grigory and James Fullerton on the North Side of Piscataway Pocoson. The witnesses were Henry Awbrey and Thomas Gouldman. This deed was recorded on 25 July 1677. [(Old) Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 6, page 10]

On 18 December 1677 John Grigory (sic) wrote his Will in Old Rappahannock Co., VA. It was proved on 4 September 1678. More details on this Will are given below. [Old Rappahannock Co., VA, Will Book, 167_-16__, Part __, page

The children of John Gregory, Sr., who are definitely documented to have existed were John Gregory, Jr., Mary Gregory, the subject of this article, Elizabeth Gregory, Ann Gregory and Richard Gregory. There could have been more. Perhaps a sister, Katherine who married a Mr. Armstrong. Perhaps there were others who married neighbors such as Gaines (Games), Gatewood, Baughan, Hoult (Holt), Fullerton or Johnson.

On 26 February 1673/74 John Gregory and Elizabeth, his wife, acknowledged a deed of unknown acreage to Edmond Pagett in Old Rappahannock Co., VA.

Note:On 10 October 1700 an Elizabeth Gregory of Essex Co., VA for love and affection gave a gift deed of a cow and a calf to her grandson, Benjamin Acres, son of John Acres. The witness was Capt. Samuel Coates. Recorded 20 October 1700. [Essex Co., VA Deed Book 10, page 59] She definitely was a widow and old enough to be a grandmother. It is unclear whether this Elizabeth Gregory is the same person as the Elizabeth Gregory, wife of John Gregory, mentioned in the above 1673/74 Deed.

On 20 Oct. 1684 John Gregory patented 1200 acres in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, 600 acres formerly assigned by William Johnson "to the said Gregory," the entire 1200 acres "formerly granted to the said John Gregory by pattent bearing date the two & twentieth of October one thousand & Six hundred sixtie three." [Patent Book 7, Page 414]

Note: This patent creates a lot of confusion. The wording of the patent indicates that the 1684 patentee was the same person as the 1663 patentee. That would mean that the patentee was John Gregory, Sr. But, as pointed out above, John Gregory, Sr., was deceased by 9 Dec. 1676. So how could he be receiving a land patent 8 years after his death? One possible explanation is that there was some mistake in entering the 1663 land patent and to correct the records they correctly entered the land patent in 1684 so as to have recorded documents that established the chain of title to the land. Another possible, but unlikely, explanation is that there were three generations of John Gregories, the elder still living in 1684 and the other two being deceased before 1684.

Note: On 18 December 1677 John Grigory (sic) wrote his Will in Old Rappahannock Co., VA. It was proved on 4 September 1678. More details on this Will are given below. [Old Rappahannock Co., VA, Will Book 2, page 106].

"John Gregory of Old Rappahannock County, Virginia" by D. C. Beaham

The Genealogist" states John Gregory gent. Son of Roger Esq was buried jan 20 1643/4 found in Church of England, Parish church of Barnby-upom-Don[Yorkshire], FHL film # 1565411. Since Roger Gregory b 1595/6 d aft 1616 is not idenfified with the title Esquire, this burial is almost certainly for a son or Rogert Gregory, Esq 1571-after 1644. Therefore John Gregory d 1676 of Old Rappahammock County, Va., is clearly not a son of Roger Gregory, Esq and Margaret Thornton.

Volume II Chapter IX Willis Family. Tenth Generation.

When the second wife of my grandfather Willis died (she was Mildred Brown when he married her), my grandmother, then the widow Gregory, wept immediately upon hearing of it. Upon some one's remarking that it was strange she grieved so much for a cousin, she replied that the death of her relative was not the sole cause of her grief, though she loved her dearly, as they were cousins and bore the same name; but that she knew that Old Harry Willis would be down to see her and she did not know what to do with him. The sequel showed she knew the man: in a little more than a month the Old Cock sat himself down before the door, and commenced a siege; she held out for some time, but was compelled finally to capitulate; so that in less than two months after the death of his second wife, Mildred Brown (formerly Washington),he married Mildred Gregory, formerly Washington and sister to the aforesaid John and Augustine. In due time, my father Lewis Willis was the first of this union
