LARRY  PARKS
A TRIBUTE... to The STAR of
'The Jolson Story',   'Jolson Sings Again', 'The Swordsman', 'Down to Earth'...and more...
... Leading man to some of the Silver Screen's most beautiful actresses,  ELLEN DREW,  RITA HAYWORTH,  BARBARA HALE,  EVELYN KEYES and in real life to actress  BETTY GARRETT, the handsome dark-haired actor with the gorgeous brown eyes shot to fame in the 1946 hit movie "The Jolson Story" which won him a Best Actor Nomination.

He has always been one of my all time favorite actors and these pages are devoted to Larry and some of his costars.
Born in Olathe, Kansas in Dec.1914 and growing up in Joliet,Illinois Larry went to College with the intent of becoming a Doctor but instead became interested in in the Theatre after taking part in campus dramatics. On graduating he found work with a Touring Stock Company until at the request of actor pal John Garfield he packed his bags for Hollywood where he was signed by Columbia Pictures who put him in a string of B Movies where he thought he was destined to stay. These included "Harmon of Michigan" "Mystery Ship" "Blondie Goes to College" "Sing for Your Supper"... until "Counterattack" with Paul Muni won him critical acclaim and a starring role in "Renegades' which led to "The Jolson Story" a monumental hit with Larry giving the best ever 'miming performance' and in which he won my and millions of other hearts! He Wed the love of his life, Betty Garrett who he'd met at The Actors Studio, and for Larry it was love at first sight. They stayed married until Larry died of a heart attack in 1975.
Following the success of "Jolson", he went on to star in "The Gallant Blade" "Down to Earth" with Rita Hayworth, "The Swordsman" with Ellen Drew, was voted 1947 Bobby Soxers man of the Year and then Larry and Betty put together a Song and Dance Variety Act to Play The London Palladium and then successfully toured Englan and Scotland with it to packed crowds.  Then in 1949 he reprised his Jolson portrayal for the sequel "Jolson Sings Again", his performances putting Al back in the spotlight and selling records to a whole new generation. After this came "Emergency Wedding" with Barbara Hale who had Played the second 'Mrs Jolson', the first played by Evelyn Keyes as 'Julie Benson'(based on actress Ruby Keeler). Larry then starred opposite Liz Taylor in the light comedy "Love is Better than Ever".('52)      Then, with Betty they took their variety Act back to England and Scotland, from there to Las Vegas, sometimes playing at the El Rancho sometimes The Desert Inn, at this time Larry was also Guesting on TV in episodes of  The Ford All Star Theatre, then he went back to England in '55 to make  "Tiger by the Tail".    On returning to the U.S. this time  Larry  took  the Lead on stage touring in "Teahouse of The August Moon" for two years.     After this, among many  others came "The Marriage go Round"  "Any Wednesday"  "Bells Are Ringing"  "High Button Shoes" "Plaza Suite" (which he played again in 1970) "Cactus Flower"  many of which Betty starred in with him.  Also "The Tender Trap" (I'd Love to have seen some of these especially 'Tender trap' and 'Teahouse'.)  More TV,  The Untouchables,  Hitchcock's 'Suspicion'   Dr. Kildare.        His last movie performance was in "Freud"  with Montgomery Clift in 1962 . After  this  he continued playing Theatre  with wife Betty and their two sons Andrew and Garrett.
