Visit your vet at least 3 months prior to international travel. Your pet needs to be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, blood tested at a recognised laboratory (this can take up to 3 months), issued with an official PETS certificate and treated against ticks and tapeworms and issued with an official certificate of treatment. You will need to renew your dog's rabies jab if you are still abroad after 12 months.
Buy your dog crates about a month before travel so they'll learn to love them by the time they're at the airport. The crates need to be the right size for the dog or the airline will not take them on board (check with the airline for their cage size requirements). Food and water bowls also need to be fitted.
In order to enter the United States you are required by Customs to have a health certificate from your vets stating that your dog is fit and well. This has to be dated within 10 days of travel. It might be worth checking the requirements for the individual States, the above is true for Florida.
If you are flying direct to Canada they require you to have an Export Certificate. Contact DEFRA for more information. [email protected]
