Sandy's Story

"Sandy"

Sandy was a very wild feral that was living in the woods in back of our house. The minute I saw him, I said to Jeff, I want him!! He's an orange boy, and I just love orange boys! It took us a couple of months to trap him. Once we caught Sandy we took him right to the vets for testing, and neutering. He came home the next day. This was in December of 1994. The next day, Mr. Fluffy blocked completely, with a large stone. So, Sandy came into our home and the next morning, Fluffy went to the vet for what turned out to be an 8 day stay.

Sandy was so afraid. He had an Elizabethan collar on which we took off immediately. It was a good thing, because he wouldn't let us touch him for a long time after that. We put him in our back bedroom, where he would be separated from the other cats. Sandy was very upset. He started pulling out all his fur. I mean, he "plucked all his feathers", as we came to call it. We later found out that he must have had an allergic reaction to the penicillin shot that the vet gave him. He looked awful! But he was eating and acting "normally" (at least normally for a recently trapped feral cat). We took him back to the vet after about 3 weeks of this, and they gave him a cortisone shot. He was fine after that!

Sandy with all his "feathers"

When we finally let him explore the rest of the house several weeks later, he immediately bonded with Fluffy. It was a bond they would share until Dec 31, 1997, the day we lost Fluffy. *sigh* When Fluffy died tragically, I thought we might lose Sandy as well, because he really adored Mr. Fluffy. He had a few tough weeks there, but Sandy is adjusting nicely now. He has allowed GrayC to become his new best friend. I know he still misses his buddy. We all do. But we think Sandy is going to be alright.

"My sweet Sandy"

He likes his Mom a lot. But he is still pretty leery of Jeff. Sandy and I have bonded. He's a very sweet cat. Still very skittish, but that's part of his charm. He'd never hurt a fly. I really love this little orange guy!

We sadly lost our beloved Sandy on December 21, 2006.
