Diminishing Girl Population in India

There are many reasons for decreasing population of girls in India However basic reasons can be broadly divided in three groups, viz. 1. Beliefs like continuation of family name, authority of religious rights etc. 2. Expenditure like upbringing, education etc. incurred on child and its returns. 3. Expenditure incurred for marriage. We need to find solution for these and not just blame sonography use in determination of sex of the foetus.

Beliefs no doubt can be changed through education however, understanding grip of religious leaders on society, help from all such leaders should be welcome. In fact efforts should me made to educate these leaders. They must accept the modifications in view of the changed circumstances and new knowledge available as on today. The most important aspect is giving equal rights to girls in performing various religious rituals, from birth to death. There should be no ritual which refrains girls from performing the same. Rights given to the eldest son should be given to the daughter if she is elder to her brother. There is a belief that girls are untouchable during their monthly course. This had been a correct concept till recent past. However, with advancement in protections and easy availability this is incorrect now. Girls can keep their body clean even during this period in today's world. They never stop doing their any other work during this period. Then why restrictions on religious rituals? If society accepts this, it shall be a great success in shading away our old beliefs and adopting concepts suitable to present time. Continuity in family name had been a requirement of past. This concept is result of un-natural deaths due to war, natural calamities, killings resulted in settlement of differences etc. So there had been a need to give birth to as many children as possible. So it was a necessity during those days and concept of 'Family Name' had been devised to achieve the aim. In today's world it has no meaning as we are facing outburst of population.

Upbringing of children is getting more and more costly. Education expenditure is spiraling day by day. There is a need to find a solution for this. Obvious solution is the Government undertakes this responsibility fully or to a large extent. In my opinion tuition fees should be borne by the Government for all education as long as the girl does well in all examinations. To the extent of higher secondary education girls may be given 2 chances and for higher education only one chance. Once the girls are properly educated they would earn and can take responsibility of parents. In time to come the concept of 'son' as the supporter in old age also would get washed. Girls can take this responsibility too.

Expenditure on marriage is expected to be fully borne by bride's parents. This is based on two reasons. Earlier girls had no share in parent's property and they had no moral responsibility to support her parents during their old age. But now things have changed. New laws have come in force.

In case our thinking changes positively there would be natural balance in population of male and female.
