27 March 2005
Dandi Salt March People need food to survive. Bare minimum items like salt, chili, onion, wheat, rice and similar items are needed by every person. Persons living below poverty line have limited capability to buy these items. If prices for these increase it simply means denying food to poor. This is inhuman. Rise in prices of inputs and taxes is the reason for this. Gandhiji wanted to convey this to the Government. While doing this Gandhiji wanted to bring awareness among people. Awareness to fight against inhuman treatment. He knew he is a mortal. When he is not there people have to fight their own war without expecting help or guidance. Therefore, instead of going directly to Dandi he started his march from Ahmedabad. This gave opportunity to send his message to wider population. He encouraged people to join his march. This way people had first hand training of fight against inhuman act. He never encouraged destructive weapons. Truth had been his prime weapon. Selflessness, integrity, labour, selfcontiousness and alike had been his supporting weapons. He trained people without expressing any word but through his own acts. Recent Dandi march did not recreate any of the Mahatma's dreams. |
