| Harry's Dreams Ron's Jokes Hermione's Analyses *"Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus" is the motto of Hogwarts. Its Latin translation is Never tickle a sleeping dragon. *In Sorcerer's Stone, Hagrid tells Harry that his mom and dad were Head Boy and Girl, but in Order of the Phoenix, we learn that it was Remus, not James, who got the prefect badge (don't you have to be a prefect to be Head Boy?). Hmm... *Ron has Bill's old robes. Remember what Bill was like at Hogwarts? Head Boy, got 12 OWLs, and all the girls loved him. Ron also had Charlie's old wand (till it broke in Chamber of Secrets), and Charlie was a great Quidditch player. He also has his grandfather's old chess set - wish we knew more about his grandfather. It seems that Ron is inheriting more than just objects from his family. *There is a grandfather clock in the Gryffindor common room. Grandfather clocks are known for stopping when someone dies and as portals to other worlds. (In The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle, the grandfather clock in King Haggard's castle leads to the lair of the red bull, and helps our heroes find the unicorns.) *There are actually two solutions to Snape's riddle in Sorcerer's Stone. *Most things make a noise when they disappear (disapparate) and then reappear (apparate). Dobby makes a loud crack. The Knight Bus makes a bang. Even the Weasley's Ford Anglia makes a popping sound. Dumbledore, however, doesn't make any noise when he appears on Privet Drive in "The Boy Who LIved" (SS). *Interesting that the Gryffindor Quidditch captain is Wood and the Slytherin captain is Flint. Flint ignites Wood. *Phoenixes are popular creatures in mythology and are associated with the Egyptian sun-god. According to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the song of a phoenix will boost courage in the "pure of heart" and instill fear in "the impure". In The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, there is a special horn that does something similar. *Flitwick's office is on the 7th flower of the West Tower, 13 windows from the right. Remember another famous 713? Also, the west is typically associated with bad things (The Wicked Witch of the West in Wizard of Oz), however, in Terry Brooks' Shannara books, the Westland is where the Elves live. Flitwick is tiny, with a squeaky voice, so could he possibly be part-Elf? *According to JKR, an Animagi's animal form is very significant. Peter Pettigrew ended up being a real rat. But James being a stag...the stag was the symbol of Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon. Merlin was also famous for turning into a stag. *Harry is the only one who passes out from the Dementors, but Ginny and Neville are also deeply affected (Ginny was possessed by Voldemort, and Neville's parents were tortured into insanity). *Professor Trelawney, though she is a right old hack, generally makes accurate predictions - she just interprets them incorrectly. *"The Boggart in the Wardrobe" (PoA)... Remind you of a little book called The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? JKR was a big fan of that book when she was younger. *When the Fat Lady's portrait was slashed, she was found hiding in a map of Argyllshire: a place famous for socks. *Lupin combs the entire school looking for a boggart to practice the Patronus with Harry, and he finds one hiding in Filch's filing cabinet. Guess what else was hidden in Filch's filing cabinet? That's right - the Marauder's Map. It hadn't been there for years, but that's where Fred and George found it. Is it possible that Lupin was looking for the map? *Peter's Animagi alias "Wormtail", is probably a reference to "Wormtongue" in The Lord of the Rings. He was a servant of the dark lord Sauron and used magic to control Theoden, king of Rohan. *The whole time-turner thing is enough to make your head spin, but did you happen to notice that when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are going down to visit Hagrid, they hide from a pair of footsteps and hear a door slam? Those footsteps belong to the Harry and Hermione from the future, and the slamming door is Hermione hiding them in a broom closet. So they were hiding from themselves hiding from themselves. Freaky. |
