carcass, carcase [kaarkas] n dead body of animal; trunk of dead animal after head, limbs, and offal have been removed by a butcher; (cont) body of human being; Liverpool based band of grinding musicians sharing an unhealthy interest in the macabre.

Jeff Walker (vocals, bass), Bill Steer (guitar, vocals), Ken Owen (drums)

Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious (Earache, 1991)

This is the most exquisite record ever to have been created by man, from the opening spoken words until the last discordant note this album never releases its grip on the listener. Necroticism... combines delicate melodies with the most extremely distorted neck-snapping riffs, brain-tenderising drums, gut-churning bass, and ear-rupturing vocals, to produce a sound that can only be described as malignant.  In short Carcass composed (or decomposed!) a masterpiece that the more it is listened to, the more up-to-date and fresh it sounds. Deliciously macabre lyrics by Jeff Walker, black gory humour! 9.97/10 - clinically & torturously technical yet with a sombre soul, the record I judge all other records to.

I just had to copy this quote from the Necroticism... sleeve, it's just downright bizarre;

 "SECOND LAYER.

When I have read of cannibals, I have put to myself the question whether I could eat human flesh. I have always felt then a severe nausea. Now I often imagine that I am eating human flesh and feel the same disgust. I should like best to be a vegetarian. I always have to think of the animal corpses.

I have the feeling many times that I could bite my child. I often bit when I was a child, if I was naughty.

I often think of the graveyards and how the dead bodies are rotting in the ground. I should much rather be cremated.

I should like to cut off a dead man's member and have it sewed fast to me. I should like to be a man. I should like to rob a dead man's soul before it went up to heaven and turn myself into a man. I would then seduce all women. I want to taste every man and every girl, what their flavor is".

- Dr Wilhelm Stekel, "Cannibalism and Necrophilism." Sadism and Masochism.

Other Carcass Records That You Must Listen To:

Symphonies of Sickness (Earache, 1989). Carcass's second album, although not as well produced as Necroticism... the distinct Bill Steer riffing and leads, and the pounding drum fills trademark of Carcass were already here, along with some of the greatest growling vocals. Seriously brutal and dark, Walker's grisly sense of humour was already firmly established. Checkout 'Ruptured in Purelence', 'Exhume to Consume', and... for some of the highlights.

Tools of the trade e.p (Earache, 1991). From the same era as Necrotcicism... this e.p contains Incarnated Solvent Abuse and three other songs of a equal quality to anything on Necroticism... my favourite being Hepatic Tissue Fermentation II (what an outro!).

Heartwork (Earache,1993). By now Carcass had developed into a much more mature band, this album saw the use of more melodies, and catchier riffs and solos. The overall arrangements were simpler than in Necroticism but Carcass still managed to keep their intensity. The medical splatter lyrics were gone and Walker adopted a more sophisticated approach to writing. This album has a very unique sound and was years ahead of it's time well worth a second listen.

I Reek of Putrefaction!
