Introduction

The author has for some time been puzzled why his G/G/Grandfather Isaac James Gillbanks changed his surname from Gillbanks to Banks for the 1861 a name his widow
again used until at least after the 1871 Census, by 1876 the family were again using Gillbanks
as their surname. One of Isaac's witnesses to his 1841 marriage to Ruth Briden signed his name Isaac Gill Banks with a distinctive space between Gill and Banks, he also used a capital B for Banks, see Isaac's Marriage Cert. There is also the mystery of the Gilbanks family from Lindend, why are there no baptisms for any of the children pre-1784?. There are also no marriages or burials for the Banks children, did the family move away before they reached marriageable age? Lindend was a hamlet from where just four families are mentioned in the Broughton Parish Registers, Wennington, Carter, Banks pre 1771, and Gilbanks post 1783. My theory is that the Banks/Gillbanks families are one and the same family.
See My Theory to see how I formed this opinion, or are the names and dates just a co-incidence and I'm clutching at straws.
