We packed the truck and went to our
favorite Mexican Restaurant just before heading out. While at the
restaurant, one of the managers appears to have a heart attack. I
help out a little making sure he is still breathing and rolling him on
his side when it seems he's going to vomit. The paramedics and
fire department arrive pretty quickly and take over, leaving me to calm
my nerves and eat.
We head up to Dinosaur National Monument to pick up the last needed
permit. Hooray! We leave in 70° weather and camp that night
in below freezing temperatures and snow falls on us the next day as we
pick up the permit and head north to Green River, Wyoming to get a few
supplies, fishing license, and to scout the resupply. And then on
up to Pinedale, just in advance of a blizzard that shuts down Interstate
80. There's no snow in Pinedale.
We watch the weather channel and despite the cold predicted, we try
to head north as there is no more snow forecast. We go past Cora
onto a dirt road with a road closed sign. We desperately want to
get to Green River Lakes - our scheduled put in. So we ignore the
sign but soon bog down in snow. Still desperate, we go off road
and upon trying to go back - slumph into a snow bank from which we have
to dig ourselves with the help of some passing strangers.
Looking over to the river as we continue, we see very little water
and lots of rocks. We turn around and head down to a bridge where
we feel we can launch. We sleep and the temperature drops to 17° Fahrenheit.
It's too cold and that seems dangerous to us. We confer and decide
to go to my brother's house in Idaho.
On the way across the border between Wyoming and Idaho as I'm
driving, Angie says, "Watch out! Watch out! Watch out!".
I scan my head to the left as she says this and catch the deer's
head just before it crushes the driver side mirror and slams into the
side of the truck. Angie is crying worried about the deer.
I'm pissed that there's a couple hundred bucks worth of
damage.
The
trip seems cursed at this point. But we finish the drive to my
brother's and stay there for a few days then drive back and put in a
little lower than we originally planned at Warren Bridge. The picture to
the right is of the Wyoming Mountains near the put in at Warren Bridge in
Wyoming.
