All About Us

We met in August, 1999 in Memphis. On our first date, we went to James' favorite Mexican restaurant and went to see 'The Blair Witch Project'. On our next date, we went to James' office party at the 'Have a Nice Day Café' on Beale Street. It was on that balmy September night that we started falling in love. After the party, we went over to the Riverwalk in Tom Lee Park and walked, talked and watched the barges and tugboats journey past on the waters of the Mighty Mississippi River (it’s still one of our favorite things to do). The evening never seemed to end--we had found our soul-mates in each other.

Since then we have enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, playing checkers, and listening to music. Our song is ‘Got To Be There’ by the Jackson Five. James ‘sang’ it one morning, and it’s been our song ever since. We also enjoy worshipping and study God’s word together, discussing politics and current events, and researching African and African American culture.

The last 2½ years have been the most wonderful of our lives and we are eagerly looking forward to the next 50 years together.

The Proposal

It was December 23, 2000, we were exchanging Christmas gifts that evening. James surprisingly announced that he was going to cook dinner, so I was really excited. We decided to open gifts before having dinner. James began to present me with a series of gifts. The first was a jewelers box, my eyes opened wide as he opened the box to reveal….a black velvet box-every girl’s dream. He then got down on one knee and looked up at me (tears already streaming down my face) and proceeds to open the box to reveal A SPRITE BOTTLE CAP! To say that I was in shock is a serious understatement and of course James had a look of complete innocence on his face. Several items later, James gave me something wrapped in Cat-Dog wrapping paper. I tear it open to find a copy of Mid-South Bride Magazine (he brings me copies of all of his company's publications). He asks "don’t you want to look through it?" I'm thinking "well, now I'am ready to eat", I started to flip through the magazine and found a beautiful platinum solitaire taped to the corner of page 27. Still on one knee, I watched in disbelief as he removed the ring and took my left hand, looking into my eyes and said “will you do me the honor of being my wife?” The rest is history.
