Ever since I turned fifty, I'd been toying with the idea of writing my autobiography. I mentioned the idea to Yvonne Brewster, and promptly put the idea on the back burner. Some months later I had an email from her asking, where is thing I promised to send? I wracked my brain trying to remember. I couldn't think of a thing. Feeling badly for not living up to my word, I wrote to her rather apologetically, asking 'What was it I'd promised?' |

Your autobiography, Mr. Rhone. Have you forgotten? Oh yes, I had indeed promised, but I had not lifted a finger. I must get to it. I must. |

That same week, I had a letter from the Calabash International Writers Festival inviting me to read thirty minutes of my autobiography. Autobiography? Oh yes, I did mention in passing to one of the organizers that I was thinking of writing the story of my life. I will refuse the invitation. Another letter arrives from Mrs. Brewster, asking how I am doing with the auto-bio thing. Oh man, it seems as if the forces are conspiring against me. I thought about it. This Calabash reading was an opportunity too good to pass up and more importantly I would keep my promise to Mrs. Brewster. I set to work. It would be an auto-bio with a difference - one to be staged filmed. After all I am a playwright/screenwriter. I would write it in three parts, each part would be a complete unit, with its own beginning, middle and end. Sounds novel, enough. |

I have learnt so much about myself from the writing and staging of this the first part of my life. Perhaps the most important thing has been the re-conciliation with my father whose gifts to me I share with you.

It's been a thrill, a little bit scary as well to be working with Yvonne Brewster after some 33 years. Our lives went in separate directions after our early years at the Barn, and we developed quite independently of each other. I watched her progress in the UK, where she started her Talawa theatre company right there in her yard. Couple of years later Tallawa had become one of the most exciting companies in England. Major among Mrs Brewster's successes was her OBE award for her work in the theatre. I gather there was quite a stir on her road the day the Queen's outriders delivered the proclamation to her door. |

To my brother Neville who has become a friend and ally who constantly reminds me that I must bruise my knee for the blessings I have received. To Gurney Beckford my friend and support pillar over the years. To all my family. especially my children who always ask 'How is the writing coming Daddy?' To Mrs. Brewster, who soon enough will be harassing me for part 2. To Ellen, who has come all the way from Scotland to add another layer of excitement to 'Bellas Gate Boy' To all the actors and crew and sponsors over the years. To my present support crew and sponsors and to all the audiences who have been the fuel that have kept the flame alive, I thank you. |
