We Are Jal A Drum

Jal A Drum is a Tribal Belly Dance and World Fusion/Folkdance Troupe from the Washington DC area. Our members consist of experienced, fun-loving dancers and musicians from Virginia and Maryland. We perform for Renaissance Festivals, Medieval Theme Events, weddings and other special occasions. Our dancing is described as Tribal Fusion because it blends dance techniques and music from many nomadic tribes in the Middle East, North Africa, India, Spain, Eastern Europe, and the Rom (Gypsies).

The troupe name 'Jal A Drum' is derived from the phrase 'Jal A Drom' which means 'travel the road' in the Gypsy/Rom language. We do travel the road to perform across Virginia, Maryland, DC, and Pennsylvania--but we also travel the drum during our performance. Drum rhythms are the powerful heart of any Jal a Drum show; they provide living energy and momentum for the melody and dancing. Jal A Drum is truly a feast for the eyes and ears. Our elaborate costumes combine coins, tassels, fringe, ethnic jewelry and tribal textiles. We enjoy every performance and look forward to seeing you in the audience!
