First Grade Math Review Lesson Five

September 28, 2001

1. Context

A.) This lesson will be presented to four seperate small groups of four or five students each during centers.

B.) Students need to learn ways of counting quickly by grouping without counting every item individually. Teaching ways of grouping can give students a concrete understanding of counting by 2,5, & 10, which most first graders in our class can recite in order but have not grasped with tangible objects. Learning to count by grouping will help student in understanding other mathematical concepts later on and in such activities as budgeting, pricing and comparisions, and many simple to complex calculations that are encountered in life situations.

C.) 6.A.1a - Identify whole numbers and compare them using the words "more than", "less than", "fewer than", or "equal to" applying counting and place value..
6.D.1 - Compare the number of objects in groups.

2. Objective:

A.Students will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts studied which include: sequincing whole numbers, grouping objects using a ten frame and pattern recognition.

3. Method

     A.Materials needed

1)Students will only need their math workbooks, Pages 29 and 30.

          2)I will provide sharpened pencils.

B.Students will be seated at one table with five chairs and a pencil available at each seat.

C.I will ask students a few review questions about how and why the ten frame can be used. Questions such as; What have we been using to count groups of ten?, how many items are there if only the top half of the 10 frame is filled?, How many if the entire frame is filled?, How can you tell if there are fewer than ten?, how can you tell if there are more than ten?

Students will then be asked to turn in their workbooks to page 29. After everyone has reached page 29, students will be asked to spell the number twenty-nine. (it is written in numerical and word form on the bottom of the page.) Instructions will be given for each section of the two page review which asks students to identify fewer, numbers missing in a sequence and drawing that number of cubes, counting how many objects, identifying and drawing a specific number of objects and identifying patterns. The final section which is identifying patterns is also in the form of a test where the students must fill in the correct circle. At this section, I will also remind students the importance of doing thier own work, not looking at their neighbors paper, and following directions by filling in the circle of the correct answer only and that their answer will be counted wrong if either both circles are colored or no circle is filled in.

4. Evaluation

A.A visual assessment will tell me who is working well independently and who is still looking for answers. As I will watch to see who is following the directions, if they seem to be doing their own thing or looking at others I will repeat the directions to see if they simply were to listening to the directions given. After giving the instructions twice, I will be able to tell who has understood the concepts and who is struggling.

     B. I will be able to compare student workbook results to notes I have taken from their work throughout the past several days to see if they are consistent or how much they have improved in their understanding.

     C. The worksheet will provide documentation of students work. The pages stay in their workbooks to remain at school and use as a ready reference. After checking workbooks individually, if there are more than three students in the entire class who are having trouble with a concept, I will work that concept into as many opportunities as I can find throughout each day when working with students. If all students do well, I will continue on to working with addition in centers. We have only worked on addition and subtraction during calendar as a whole group. I want to see individual understanding in addition at this point and if students can count on or if they must count in order from one. I wish I had abucuses to use.

5. Feedback:

You transitioned very well from small group instuction back to whole group because of the dynamics of the class today.

6. Reflection:

The students were very active today, verbally and physically. Due to all the activity, we were unable to use the centers today. We could not even get students to and from the carpet in any orderly fashion and ready to listen. Therefore, I continued with my plan with the whole class as one group. Little modification was necessary other than allowing students to use their own pencils and not being able to observe students as closely as in small groups. Students worked very well and quickly on the problems. I am not sure if the problems offered in the workbook were too simple, but the performance was nearly 100%. I have to make an exception for one student who is often out for resource. I do intend to continue revisiting these concepts to asure student understanding and progress. I also realize that even though their performance today was very positive, they must keep practicing new skills in order to retain their new information. I am confident this class is ready to continue on to working on addition facts.
