The year 2002 is very involved for me. We hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics here in Salt Lake City. In addition to having some volunteer responsibilities, a variety of music-related endeavors also occurred. After the Olympics, it's also time for me to prepare for college next year.

January 19, 2002
HONOR CHOIR CONCERT

Apologies for the sound quality of these selections.
Instruments of Praise - Allen Koepke
Nada te turbe - Joan Szymko
Jubilant Song - John Leavitt

Coincidentally, I did a rather more advanced version of the final song this previous summer during my second tour with Sound of America. In that situation, though, I was in the band rather than the chorus. Alternate version: A Jubilant Song.

OLYMPICS
Park City School District suspended classes for nearly the entire month of February, to avoid the potential transportation hassles inherent with holding the Olympics. I'm doing volunteer duties nearly every day throughout the Games. However, there are a couple of Olympic related items, separate from my volunteering, in which I'm also involved. Coke sponsored a local-student recognition program, and thanks to one of my friends (thanks, Jennifer!), I got to be included. Here's my banner on Main Street in Park City, and the description on the plaque below:

CULTURAL OLYMPIAD
I joined the Utah Youth Symphony this year. When I first showed up, they actually had sufficient clarinet players. But, they didn't have a bass clarinet player. So, I get to play a new instrument! We had several concerts as part of the 2002 Cultural Olympiad for the Winter Olympics, including Abravanel Hall here in Salt Lake City. We also went "on the road" to bring the music to other areas nearby. We were in Driggs, Idaho and Jackson, Wyoming, as well as some other locations in Utah. These recordings are from our concert at Abravanel Hall. WARNING: Both pieces are complete concert pieces and therefore substantially longer than other pieces on my pages. The Bernstein is 23 minutes, and the Copland is nearly 44 minutes long.
Dances from West Side Story - Leonard Bernstein
Third Symphony - Aaron Copland (Separate Movements: 1,2,3,4)
For those familiar with it, Movement 4 uses the same theme as Fanfare for the Common Man.

Sigh... The final few concerts from High School before graduation:
April 23, 2002 Spring Concert - Park City High School Symphonic Band
Barnum and Baily's Favorite - Karl King
The Fire of Eternal Glory - Dmitri Shostakovich, arranged by Timothy Rhea
Second Suite in F - Gustav Holst
I March II Song Without Words III Song of the Blacksmith IV Fantasia on the 'Dargason'
The Trombone King - Karl King

May 20, 2002 Sing Into Spring - Park City High School Advanced Women's Choir
Jubilate Deo - J.H. Roman / J. W. Harris
Vere Languores Nostros - Antonio Lotti
Nigra Sum - Pablo Casals
Swing Down Chariot (Young Women In Harmony) - Spiritual
Except for appearances at the Baccalaureate, this is our last choir concert at school. What otherwise would be a sad occasion is mitigated by the fact that we leave this Friday (May 24th) on a short concert tour on a cruise ship in Vancouver, British Columbia... :-)
