The Walk
All the walking steps in the dance are based on the normal and natural walk. |
Forward Walk
The moving foot is pushed forward first with the ball of the foot
skimming the floor, going on the the heel as it passes the toes
of the stationary foot; at his point the back heel begins to
leave the floor. Continue to the extent of the stride on the heel
of the moving foot, gradually releasing the back foot to the ball
and then to the toes. At the end of the stride, lower the front
toes to the floor, drawing the back foot towards the front foot.
The back foot toes and then the ball of the foot skim the floor
lightly when the back foot is being brought forward, ready for
the next walk. Remember to keep the feet in a straight line, and
the toes are turned neither in nor out.
Backward Walk
The moving foot goes back with the ball of the foot skimming the
floor, and then onto the toes as it passes the stationary foot;
and then going gradually to the ball again at the full extent of
the stride. At this point the front foot is brought back with
pressure on the heel, with the toes slightly raised from the
floor, until it reaches the back foot, when the toes are lowered,
so that the foot is then flat. At this point, and not before, the
heel of the back foot reaches the floor. The length of stride
should be adapted as for the forward walk.
The heel of the foot onto which the body weight is being taken,
if lowered before the feet come together then the pull-back
effect will be felt; whereby the person moving back suddenly
moves away momentarily. And this action appears very jerky, apart
from creating imbalance for both the dancing partners.
Also the person moving backward steps on the floor only after the
partner who is moving forward has stepped. This helps in
maintaining the gap between the feet of the dancers constant and
the flow remains smooth.
Walk (General) |
Start
Weight is on the flat foot, but more towards the Ball.
Man Starts with the Right foot and Lady with the Left
foot. A Body shifts. Weight is more towards the Ball of Left foot for Man and more towards the Right heel for the Lady. B Man's Left heel lifts off the floor and Lady balances on the heel. C Man's Right foot and Lady's Left foot move. D Lady's moving back, so she steps with the Left toes after Man has stepped with his Right heel. E Man keeps the foot flat, however for the lady's Left heel remains up until the feet are almost together. Bending the Left knee facilitates the smooth backward movement. F For the Lady the Heel is still off the floor. Finish Ready to begin the walking stride with the other foot. |
