Waltz and Viennese Waltz: Basic Step

Forward, Side, Close; and Backward, Side Close.

The counts here are from 1 to 6. Thus again all the odd numbers would be on the left foot and even on the right.

Initially with counts up to six practise the 'First Exercise' for some time to get use to counting up to six.

After this continue serially as given below. If one stops in between start again from the very beginning.

1. Start mark-time on the spot, and count up to six.

2. For one take a step forward and then staying in this new position and do the rest of the steps.

3. For the count of four step back and perform the rest of the steps in his new position.

Now you would be moving forward for the count of 1, and backwards for the count of 4. Thus you would be performing the exercise in a smaller area and wouldn't be progressing continuously as for the exercise against the serial number 2.

4. For the counts of 2 and 5 move to one's side, and repeat the rest of the steps in that new position.

Thus one would step forward for the count 1, then move to the side for 2, and for the count of 3 one would do the mark time in the new position. Next for the count of 4 one would be moving back, to the side for 5, and on the spot for 6.

Through out the exercise one should be performing the mark time by consciously flexing the knee and weight should be only on one foot without the break in rhythm of counts.

Similarly start the exercise on the right foot. Thus for the count of 1, the right foot moves forward and the left foot moves back. And for the side movement the free foot is moved to its side.
