Jadell NightSong's Tale Part 1

StormRunner banked sharply to the left as he continued his border patrol. "This ridge is the marker for the southern border of our patrols. Mark it well, youngling." He telepathically sent to, SkyKnight, his young pupil. "Those beyond the range of your sense's at this point are of no threat to Nightwing Hearth."

SkyKnight bristled slightly at the term youngling but turned her attention to the land below her, marking it deeply in her memory.

"One more sweep and we head back, the next patrol will start out as we return. Take the inner circuit, I will take the outer." StormRunner directed, moving to fly just outside the border ridgeline. SkyKnight quickly moved to the fly just inside the same ridgeline.

"What of those that may lie just beyond our sense's. Might they not mean us harm?" SkyKnight asked her mentor?

"Aye they might and most likely do. This is why there is always a pair of dragons in flight along our borders. The next flight will start out as we reach the inner boarder. No dragon ever makes the patrol alone, less he or she be taken in an attack. We are strong and most mighty but not infallible and lone dragons have been known to meet their death at the hands of a powerful mage or even a dragon of evil nature."

"If a lone mage can defeat a dragon what of that young human who camps and sings such irritating songs just beyond the foot of the boarder ridge?" SkyKnight asked quietly.

"Ahh so that is what is bristling along my nerves." StormRunner shuddered slightly. "Good work young one. Let us get a mite closer but stay well out of sight. We wish to check out this human not have him or her check us out."

SkyKnight banked slightly and followed her mentor into a lower flight pattern. Quickly skimming along just above the tree line. "Her. SkyKnight, clarified. The human is female...and a young one as well.....Her tunes are lovely...her lyrics leave a great deal to be desired. The combination is extremely irritating."

"Agreed." StormRunner replied. "Keen observation. Do you notice anything else about this young human?"

SkyKnight gave what passes as a dragon frown of concentration and sent all her senses gently toward the sleeping human......"Sleeping???? She is a sleep." SkyKnight sent in amazement. "She sings in her sleep!" SkyKnight started to chuckle. "No wonder her lyrics are so bad. Perhaps when she is awake her lyrics are more ...fitting."

"Perhaps." StormRunner replied. "One would certainly hope so else she will be a very poor bard despite the pleasing tunes she creates. However she is no threat to the Hearth. She is to young to be an accomplished bard yet along a powerful mage. Come we start our flight back."

"Do we report the young human?" SkyKnight asked quietly as she turned inward for the circuitous flight home.

"Aye. No matter that she is no threat. She is within our patrol range therefore she is reported."

"She will be a controversy."SkyKnight stated flatly.

StormRunner turned his head to regard his young apprentice thoughtfully. "Vision?"

"Aye." SkyKnight nodded mentally. "Not much of one just a sense of slight foreboding and change...great change."

StormRunner nodded, accepting his young apprentices interpretation of her vision without question. Silently they flew the remainder of their patrol flight. Each dragons senses fully extended as they flew indirectly toward home.
