Grand success of 2nd Bijoya sammelani - A Report"Whew! Finally it was over"...perhaps a valid expression from an organizational point of view, but judging by reports pouring in from various sources, there were times when people perhaps wished the evening to go on and on... Thanks goes to many, but we are not picking individuals here. Instead, we are wholeheartedly thanking the whole community for joining in and making this Sammelan a Grand Success! Sometimes, it's worth the effort to pause and consider how far we have moved from our "pig-pen" days, when goons ruled the locality, and civic facilities were almost non-existent, and Central Road was a free parking space for the countrys' diesel-belching truck population! The programme was ably compered by S P Chowdhury. The trio of Gauri Dasgupta, Anjana Dasgupta, and (again!) Gauri Dasgupta sang the inaugural song. After the inaugural address by President Sri Niren sen, in which he cautioned against complacency, Ananya Dasgupta danced beautifully to the strains of background music. Little Titir (Titir Bhowmick) recited Sukumar Ray's "Bhoy peo na!" With soldiers such as Titir in the green-squad, we hardly need to be afraid! Same with Moumita(Dasgupta) who recited another poem. Somdeep and Somdatta Chowdhury, with their beloved daddy earnestly egging them on to perfom at least "something" on stage, regaled the audience with their resolute refusals to comply. You just can't take anybody for granted these days! After these began the 20 min long "srutinatak" or drama recital - "Kimbhoot Tadanta". You may find its english version(Kimbhoot Investigations) here. The cast comprised of Uday Dasgupta, S P Chowdhury, Ashok Mukherjee, Sankar Dasgupta and Prosenjit Roy, with a special one-liner acted out by A K Mandal. Meanwhile, the Hon'ble Councillor, ward no. 93 had arrived. He sat through the "natak" and was later invited to speak on the ocassion. He wholeheartedly lauded the communitys' effort and urged us to publicize our movement(That's exactly why we have "Jadavpurgreens"!). The Cultural Secretary then spoke on the need to focus on our achievements as an impetus for further progress. Refreshment packets arrived on time. Tapas Dasgupta took it upon himself to engage the audience in mass singing. Printouts of songs(courtesy Mr Dasgupa) were distributed amongst the audience. Soon the evening was tranformed to something magical with mass rendition of some timeless Bengali songs. Sapna Deb, who doesn't live in the neighbourhood but is a witness to the changes in our locality expressed her solidarity with our cause. Other singers for the evening were Juthika Guhathakurta, Gouri Dasgupta, Samita Chatterjee and a somewhat ill(with a throat bug) but ever-spirited Manjusha Guha(former Cultural Secretary). There were further recitations by Bharati sen, Ashok Mukherjee and young Tanaya Das. Sreyashi Roy inspired us with her "We shall overcome". Maya Mukherjee, Sankar Dasgupta, Sunetra Chowdhury(who had earlier sung a solo), Manjusha Guha and others teamed up for a beautifully rendered chorus. Closer towards the end, S P Chowdhury delighted us with a folk song. Prof A K Mandal, Vice-President, finally ended the sammelan with a generous thanks-giving speech. All's well that ends well! ***Please let us know if the list of participants is incomplete. We will immediately rectify. Thanks! - webmaster Read > Leaflet on this issue
