HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
15th August was celebrated by us at Ushakiran Apartments. A
happy congregation of residents sang "Jana Gana Mana adhi..."
as President of Parivesh Suraksha Committee Sri Niren Sen, in the company
of Hon'ble Councillors (ward nos. 93 and 96 respectively) Sri Ratan Dey
and Sri Debabrata Majumdar, hoisted the National Flag.
The assembly was slow to pick up(and the Joint Secretary had to repeatedly
request residents through loudspeaker to visit Ushakiran). However, in
the end it did pick up pretty well and became a highly successful and
warm event. The Flag was hoisted more or less(!) uneventfully
and the guests and the residents proudly posed for photographs by the
fence.
Who said what...
Sri NIren Sen(President) - Stressed the need for continued
social interactions. "The Pond is important," he said, "but
it is more important that we maintain our resolve for better living conditions
and our unity".
Sri Ratan Dey(Councillor, ward 96) - Lauded our efforts,
asked us to increase our sphere of influence("involve more people"),
announced that some funds from the MP fund has been allocated for
renovation of pond and its surroundings. But he did warn that this may
take some time, and the work will proceed in stages. However, there may
be some initial work around the Puja season.
Sri Debabrata Majumdar(Councillor, ward 96) - Spoke eloquently
on India's past, her future as he sees it, the need for Indians to be
self-assured and also the ill-effects of toxins and genetics used in modern
farming methods.
Sri Ashim Roy(acting treasurer) - Spoke forcefully on the greater
need for unity and interaction amongst the residents. "What will
we do with a cleaner pond? Will it help us get to know each other better?
The latter is of foremost priority, and it could only be done through
frequent social gatherings - which, obviously needs money". He went
on to urge residents to contribute their subscriptions more regularly.
The residents were then asked if a printed budget statement should be
published and distributed amongst them. They agreed and the Acting Treasurer
is currently working on it.
Dr S P Chowdhury(Cultural Secretary) - Repeatedly warned us against
division in the ranks.
Others who spoke were Sri Sankar Dasgupta(reflected upon Debabratababus
statements, suggested occasional debates/discussions on environment),
Sri Somen Chakraborty(suggested a rough map of the locality be published
on the website), Sri A. Sengupta, Mrs Mandal, Prof Sarbani Roy (highlighted
the need for concerted action against Autorickshaws which cause
severe noise pollution through defective/neglected "silencers").
Prof A Mandal(Vice President) - Concluded the meet by thanking
everyone present and host "Ushakiran".
A special "thank you" was also reserved for Smt Maya Mukherjee
who had arranged for tea and refreshments for the assembled residents.
Thanks goes to Puja Kargupta and "Kalia"(Security guard Sambhu's
12 year old son) for flag-decoration. Same to Benoy Majumdar, and also
for arranging for the chairs. Thanks as well to Uday Dasgupta for arranging
for the loud speakers and to everyone (mentioned or not mentioned here)
for the success of the 2nd Independence Day Celebrations by the Parivesh
Suraksha Committee. Good Luck!

The Knot ! - well...ah...these things
do happen. As we proudly watched, the National Flag ( yet to be unfurled,
since it contained flower petals within its folds) went up smoothly. Sri
Sen was pulling the rope and the Councillors were at his side. The next
thing to do was to give it a sharp tug, which would unfurl the flag and
release the petals. That however, was the script. But the knot holding
the petals got stuck (temporarily..phew!). In a flash, "Flag-man"
Benoy Majumdar was bodily hoisted up till he reached the level of the
knot (so that we need not pull the Flag down now that it has reached the
top). He however, fixed the knot in a jiffy, and as the GLORIOUS
tri-color unfurled it was swept up in a breeze. Petals showered down,
like brightly lit drops of paint in a brilliant sun, and we all had a
good laugh in that very PROUD moment. In the background, the very first
notes of the National Song, initiated by Manjusha Guha, Gauri Dasgupta,
Dr. Sunetra Chowdhuri, Nabendu Chowdhuri and others were just begining
to waft in....
