Q. What is an angel?

A short question with a long answer but I will try to be brief.  Angels were created before man by our creator or God essence.  The role of angels is varied but many angels have been created specifically with the purpose of looking after Gods children us.

An angel is a spiritual being created by God, without a body, for the service
                                                        of Christendom and the Church.

Martin Luther (Table Talk)

Q. Can my Grandma be my Angel?

Human spirits cannot be our angels insomuch as an angel can never be human and a human can never be an angel (with the exception of Archangel Metatron/Archangel Sandalphon see reference).  Most traditions say that humans can never be angels.  Having said that, the loving spirit of passed-over relatives can and do, watch over us from the other side.  They are able to send us loving energy in a similar way to angels.

Humans are spirit in the body-vessel, but angels are pure light energy.

Q. How can an angel help me?

Angels do not have a full understanding of what it is to be human, so they do not always understand our problems totally.  Angels are good at placing the right people into our path when we need them (set up as a useful co-incidence for the purpose of guidance and moving us forward with our pre-birth life plans), and specifically at sending us loving energy and support.

Angels do have speciality roles and we can call upon a specific angel to help with certain tasks (see the Angel Almanac for a detailed lists).

Q. If we have angels around us, why is it that things go wrong in our lives?

As spirit we move into a human body to work through lessons and goals that we set for ourselves before birth.  (We pre-plan skills that we need to practice.)  Angels as such are not allowed to interfere with this plan (or they would be meddling with our curriculum.)

Sometimes these lessons are much harder than we ever imagined they might be and this is where an angel can help.  They can ease a difficult situation and help us through the pain.  They can bring along sympathetic people to help us achieve our goals and support us in times of difficulty.  There is one important proviso; we have to ask our angels for their assistance.  They need our permission to get involved in our lives.  Of course, emergencies are different!

Q. How can I give my angels permission to help me?

Nothing complicated is needed here just ask!  You can ask by talking to your angels out loud, you can ask in your head, write them a letter or use some other symbol of request.  Nowadays it is easy to find those little guardian angel pins or tokens and coins which the words guardian angel printed on them.  All of these act as requests for help.  Every time we look at these little symbols we think of our angels and this strengthens the contact.

Q. Is it true that we all have our own guardian angel with us all the time?

It is my understanding that we all have spiritual guides with us all (well most) of the time.  Our guides act as teachers and friends on the other side but with the knowledge and experience of being human that angels do not possess.

For every soul, there is a guardian watching it.

The Koran

Some people (depending on our task and roles in life) have several angels with them all the time too, and others have angels with them only when they are needed (or called for by ourselves or our guides).  We can call upon angels at any time if we feel we need help, guidance or protection.  Use any words which feel appropriate to you.  Remember to say thank you after your request.

Q. Whats the difference between an angel and an archangel?

Angels (the collective name for all the celestial beings) are split up into spheres or an angelic hierarchy.  In the group of angels closest to earth (the third sphere) and working with humankind are the angels (also the name of the separate group or level) and the archangels.

In many references the archangels are said to be the higher ranking angels and the term angels within the third sphere are thought to be angels with individual tasks, to see over a specific person for example rather than a larger role such as to see over all the bodies of water on the earth for example.

Q. Do all angels have wings?

Many religious sources list certain angels as having wings.  In one source of reference, Gabriel is said to have 140 wings!  Some people see angels with wings and some do not!  Many people believe that angels are beings of light and do not need wings at all and the light itself having been mistaken for wings.  This idea is thought to go back to the earliest times when humankind assumed that to fly; an angel would need such assistance.

Some people who see angels believe that the wings are in fact streams of upward-flowing energy.

Winged creatures were known to the Vikings as Valkyries the Greeks called them the horae.  The Greek God Hermes served as a messenger and was shown with wings on his feet.  Do these early references contribute to the angels-have-wings tradition?  Angels were not really known as having wings (with any regularity at least) until the time of the Emperor Constantine.  As with other images of angels, it is the angel art of the Renaissance which gives us much of our angel imagery.  In the bible for example,  the angel who gave the news of the resurrection of Jesus were described as two men but appearing in the light associated with angels.

Ancient cave drawings and carvings do show beings with wings though.  Were these angels or something else?  We may never know.
