Just when everyone thought it was safe to go into the CD shop
Everyone had left the Metal band Great White for dead. They had jumped
around from label to label making awesome music, but no one seemed to notice.
The fans kept going to shows, but the radio stopped, the MTV stopped, the
Arena touring stopped it all seemed to come to a screeching stop. And then
like, one of their albums, a Shot in the Dark, the members of Great White,
started a new feeding frenzy with a new CD called "Can't Get There From Here".
The Disc immediately grew on me from the first spin, and just keeps getting
better. The best way to describe this musical masterpiece, I feel is to go song by
song So without further delay, I present, the music of Great White.
- Track 1: Rollin Stoned. The first single for the album just kicks you in your ass.
The song is in the realms of other Great White rockers like "Desert Moon", "Call
it Rock n Roll", "Rock Me", and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy". I my opinion, there
isn't a better song to start this disc off with. Not only does it have a great rock
beat, but the chorus lends itself very easily to be sung along with. One of the best
Great White songs ever written. "Someone had my video blastin' threw the radio,
neighbors screemin' out "what the hells going on""
- Track 2: Ain't No Shame. This is scheduled to be the second release off the CD.
An up tempo power ballad that features Classic Mark guitar in the beginning. The
song is about not being ashamed to be in love. Jack's vocals are just amazing.
You can feel the pain that the "subject" of the song is going threw by listening to
the way Jack sings. Great guitar solo by mark short but sweet. All in all, a very
quality song one of the best on the CD. Very emotional "When you say your
sick and tired of being lonely, and your nights are cold and filled with misery,
well, it's time you took a look a little closer, a little closer. Cause that just ain't the
way it ought be, NOOOOOO."
- Track 3: Silent Night. Power ballad written all over this one. Great lead by Michael. Song is about love
lost. Audies drums are outstanding but you have to listen for them. Good blues
riff all threw by Mark. Another song where you can feel the emotion in Jack's
voice. I believe that Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankees) helps with the
backing vocals on this one and adds a nice touch to the song. A hit if released.
"So you think I'm crazy cause I feel this way? Gonna pick myself up off the
ground and turn it around, on this Silent night."
- Track 4: Saint Lorraine. Another song that kicks your ass. A rocker from the
start. One of the better guitar songs on the CD. Sean riffs on the bass, and Audie
adds a ton with the symbols. The song is a good nature song about someone
getting their life turned around by a woman. Someone who seemed to be able to
get someone out of their "shell". "You put out the trash, cleaned up my living
room, took me to bed, now I'll never be the same. Brought out the man that must
have been hiding in me, yeah, yeah".
- Track 5: In the Tradition. Second only to Twice Shys "She Only", the most
beautiful song ever written for a Great White CD. This is a type of song that you
would expect Jimmy Page and Robert Plant to have written. They could only
wish they had come up with such a great song. Jack Blades adds wonderful
backing vocals on this song.
Definitely a song that could cross over into a Top 40 chart. One of their all time
best. "I'm ready to crash, yes I am. But I'll hide it the best that I can. I can't fake
a smile, threw the evening I'll probably crack if the pains too strong."
- Track 6: Freedom Song. A good song for this CD. Not really a rocker, but one
where all members of the band can be herd. Starts a bit slow, and picks up. I feel
that the lyrics are very Grateful Deadish. "Met a girl in California, she asked me if
I would stay, and if I could for anyone, you know it babe. But soon I got the
same ol' feeling, and I tried to make some scene of it all".
- Track 7: Gone to the Dogs. This song picked me up, and threw me across the
room, slamming me into the wall. This song could have very easily been on their
first CD "Great White". Jack gets to do some growling and screaming, while
Mark, Audie, Mike, and Sean try to keep up. The best Rock song from the guys
since Psycho City's "Psycho City". "Never had a love keep a leash on me, I'll
keep my tail waggin' till the next time I seeeeeeeeeeee yaaaaaaaaaaa".
Track 8: Wooden Jesus. It is weird that you can come across a CD that features
your all time favorite and all time least favorite song by a band. Well, Can't get
There accomplished it for me. Wooden Jesus is by far my least favorite song ever
written by the boys, where as Psychedelic Hurricane (see track 11) is my all time
favorite song now. I am not sure what it is about this song. It has a great beat,
Jack and Mark do a phenomenal job, with nice backing by the rest. But I just
can't get into it. I wonder if it has anything to do with my dislike of Temple of the
Dogs song titled "Plastic Jesus"? lol. Just not a song for me I guess. "I need a
savior, so I try to believe in my Wooden Jesus, Doesn't mind, he always loves
me, he's my kind of a wooden Jesus."
- Track 9: Sister Mary. Very good ballad. I interpret this song as being so into
someone that nothing else even matters to you. You can look into their eyes and
see your future. Not to rip off Bon Jovi, but the type of person that when you
get drunk, you want them to be the wine. Listen to this song, and try to get there
in your relationship I have a feeling it will be pretty difficult, but something to
shoot for. "Let her lovin' come to you, let her lovin' come to you, ohhhhhhhhh,
her love will come to you, and bring you home, yeah".
- Track 10: Loveless Age. One word. Mark. Great Blues song. I know many
people would love a whole CD of songs like this, and I am one of them. Song
starts out real slow, with Jack kinda growling the words GREAT BASS by
SEAN very simple line, but without it not the same song. Great piano by
Mike adds a great touch to Audies drumming. About half way threw the song, it
picks up, and Mark just blasts into overdrive on the solo very addicting song
Have found myself walking around singing the chorus for no reason. One of their
all time best. "I don't want you, what I need, is the touch of a woman who wont
try and make me bleed. Maybe I'm crazy, yeah, baby that's me. No, no, no, no,
no, no don't go dragging me down and then leave me to drown in this loveless
age".
- Track 13: Psychedelic Hurricane. Hands down, in my opinion, the best song ever
written by Great White. Very moody song. Jack plays with vocal synthesizers,
and the band does some "La, La, La, La, La's which gives the song a very
Beatelish sound. The song starts really slow and continues to increase in not
only tempo but also in volume. I have only found one way to describe the song,
and that is a 4:15 second orgasm. Simply their best, hands down. "Falling, yes
I'm crawling, just like a demon, who can't let go. I feel ecliptic, this loves electric,
just like a diamond, as black as coal. Psychedelic hurricane, clouds outside my
windowpane, spinnin' round and round. Paint the skies above you."
- Track 12: Hey Mister. One of the things I have always loved about this band, is
that they truly seem to care about their fans. What I like even more, is that you
don't have to be a fan for them to care. And this song is just a small statement on
where the band stand on our country's homeless problem. The song, I feel, kinda
feeds off the poem that Jack put in his solo CD "Shelter Me". The poem goes "
Look around today, passersby no time to day hello, it's all fast food, talk shows,
Superbowls, Where do I stand in line for peace of mind? Does anybody
know? While on our streets the people sleep, the tattered souls and shoeless
feet, wondering where humanity has gone Does anybody know?" It takes balls
to make a statement that this song does, but GW has those balls. And if you think
the band is full of crap, don't. Some fans have seen their generosity first hand,
right Shell? Lol J (had to give props to my woman, lol) Very touching song, and
very meaningful. "Hey mister cant you see the ring around the moon, maybe it's
the water in my eyes. All I ever wanted was to live life unashamed, all I ever
needed was some love."
- Track 13: Good Die Young. (bonus track on Japanese import) Very good rocking
song. It's sad that US fans didn't get this one on the domestic release. Another
one that starts really slow, with just Audie and Sean for about 10 seconds. And
then Mark just crushes you with his guitar, only to let Jack take over. The
keyboards in the background give this song a spooky feeling. I would have to say
the "darkest" song that GW has ever recorded. It is a song I feel that really
showcases everyone at the best. Jack recites one of his poems under a screaming
solo. Just an awesome song. "If the good die young, were gonna live for every,
heaven and earth couldn't stand in our way If the good die young, were gonna
live for ever, and that's the price we gonna pay."
So that's "Can't Get there From Here". I hope I helped you in seeing that this is
an awesome CD in my opinion, and one worth picking up.
