May I Belong
Part 2

Jen slouched in her chair, flipping through numerous channels. She paused on "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" just in time to see Buffy dust another vampire. Jack wasn't around and it felt as if something was missing. She missed talking to him about pointless stuff that happened to her in school or how sweet Henry was the other day. Jen got bored of Buffy's picture perfect clothes and hair, even as she was stopping the apocalypse again. Where did that girl find time to change and get her hair done as the whole world was about to be dumped in hell? She turned the TV off. It clicked off submitting the room into half darkness, which was kept at bay due to a small lamp, which illuminated the dim room.

Jen got off the couch. She headed to the kitchen to get some chocolate chip ice cream as the phone started to ring. Expecting to hear from Jack, Jen picked it up rather eagerly. She heard the familiar masculine voice on the other line. It was Jack. He had promised to call and now he had.

"Hey, didn't hear from you in a while." Jen smiled to herself. It was so good to hear from him.

"Hey, sorry for the fast departure, I felt--," Jack interrupted himself in mid-sentence. "I needed some alone time."

"I know Jack. I mean, I understand. I got your letter." There was an uncomfortable silence that lasted for what seemed to be hours. "So...how's the road trip going?" Jen was momentarily relived to find some kind of a question to ask him to end this unbearable silence.

"Oh, it's satisfactory. I mean, could be better but...anyway. I met someone." Jack sounded hopeful.

"Wow, way to get over Ethan." Jack grinned.

"Thanks, I think." More silence.

"When are you coming home?" Jen asked, steering the conversation to the answers she wanted to hear most.

"In a week, I promise."

"Come back soon. It's lonely here without you. You know Dawson; he's still depressed about Joey and Pacey. And the two lovebirds flew away right after you left." She was close to tears.

"I'll try. Bye, tell hi from me to everyone." He clicked off the receiver.

"Bye," she whispered to an empty room.
