
The first units of study in your new elective deal with the nation-state and nationalism, the major themes of the course. We will touch upon industrialization and imperialism as the 19th century turned into the 20th. We will follow the current events going on in Europe today as well, investigating problems as well as solutions offered.
Then, our studies will turn to the onset
of World War I, the Armenian genocide, and Versailles Treaty.
This will be followed by looking at the Russian revolution, communist
theory, Stalinism in the Soviet Union, the Holoc
aust and
genocide.. As we examine these issues of the past, we shall look
at current issues that Europe is dealing with, including Bosnia and Kosovo, the legacy of communism, and the
future of the European Community.
