This is the part where I introduce all my favourite games.
Shining Force, specifically Shining Force II, was the game that actually got me into RPGs in the first place. It's a truly epic game, and my Shining Force page talks about not only that, but also all the other wonderful games in the series. The 'Force' games are so-called 'Strategy RPGs', where you control (unsurprisingly) a force of heroes. Others include dungeon crawlers like ... Holy Ark and ...In the Darkness, and there is also a Zelda-esque game, Shining Wisdom.
Langrisser is another Strategy RPG, but concentrating much more on the strategy. In terms of this, I prefer it to ShF, but it doesn't have the same kind of feel to it that makes ShF so special. Neither can you roam around randomly, as you should be able to in all true RPGs. However, It's still a great game.
Ys is another Zelda-esque game, but the nice story-lines, cool looking graphics and some of the best music ever to be in a game (IMHO) make this series get into my top 5 easily. |
