| Ashley is our female tortoiseshell cat. She was sent by the Cosmic Cat Replacement Bureau to help me deal with the death of our Maine Coon, Kit-Kat. As a young kitten, she was found by a friend of ours at the parking lot of his work place. She came over to him as he approached his car after work one evening and climbed up his pant leg! So he took her home. He and his wife took her to the vet, and got her first shots. But, at the time, they had 2 large dogs, 2 parrots, and 3 cats, 2 of whom had feline leukemia. Not wanting to expose the kitten to the deadly disease, they kept her isolated in their library, with food, water, and a litter box. They played with her every day, and the dogs came in to visit, but she was not allowed any direct contact with the other cats. Our friends asked my husband if he would like to take Shadow (the name they had given her) as a companion for our 20-year-old Kit-Kat. He went to visit her, and liked her a lot. We agreed to adopt her, and picked a day to go to their house and bring her home. It turned out to be the day that we took Kit-Kat in to the vet to be put down, and we ended up going directly from the vet's office to their house. So we didn't have any time at home without a cat. The transition from taking care of an ill, geriatric cat to taking care of a rambunctious kitten absorbed all of my energy. ... to be continued ... |
