Ixion: Who am I speaking with, and what is your part in Shun?
Richie: Im Richie and i am the bassist
Ixion: How long have you been playing out together?
Richie: Weve been playing shows since late 97
Ixion: How did Shun form?
Richie: David,Cris,Billy and myself all went to school together and were
freinds...somehow that just gradually turned into a band.......jac entered a
few years later. After a long search for a drummer who we felt completely
comfortable with.
Ixion: Shun has a very melodic sound. How would you classify, or describe
yourself?
Richie: Weve always just considered ourselves a rock band.
Ixion: Do you all draw that sound from influences, or does it come naturally
through the chemistry of the band?
Richie: We are heavily influenced by all types of music but what ever we may
sound like is due to whatever comes out when we get together.
Ixion: What are some of your influences?
Richie: Everything possible...Portishead,Failure,Far,STP,Sunny Day Real
Estate,Esthero,Alice In Chains,Pearl Jam,Radiohead,Tori Amos,
Tool,Deftones,Soundgarden, and the list could go on for hours
Ixion: With all the trends that have been coming about as of late... the
rap-core, the nu-metal clones, etc., its great to hear a band that has a
sound all its own. How do you feel about recent metal trends?
Richie: I think that people should listen to music and make music that they
enjoy. If listening to classical is what you enjoy you should do it.If you
love bands like Drowning Pool and Kid Rock.. listen and enjoy it.We dont
choose the type of music we make it just happens. If we were best at writing
rap-metal type stuff or country or whatever then thats probably what we would
be doing. Justas long as people are staying true to themselves then i have
only respect for what they attempt to do in life.
Ixion: Has Shun made it a point not to conform to those trends?
Richie: Nah we arent really trying to make any points to anyone...we're just
focused on getting our music heard.
Ixion: What song best represents what Shun is all about?
Richie: Hmmm hard to say. Does it have to be a shun song? I would have to say
Nutshell by Alice In Chains has always been a song that was a good
description of the band
Ixion: Are there any bands from your area that you feel deserve some
recognition?
Richie: Yeah Nashville has some great bands.Celebrity, Look What I did, Scatter The
Ashes, Peal, Once Agian, Sub Method the list is endless
Ixion: Who have you enjoyed playing out the most with so far?
Richie: We always have fun. Every band weve met have been great but i think we
always have the most fun playing with Not Waving But Drowning. They are just
an awesome band and some of the best and funniest people youll ever meet.
Ixion: If you could chose any couple bands to play out with... who would it
be and why?
Richie: I would love to play with STP or Radiohead as far as well known
artists....just because we are long time fans of both those bands.
As far as underground goes....i would love to do a Shun/Dredg/Not Waving But
Drowning tour just because i think it would be a blast
Ixion: Whats the band's current label status?
Richie: No label....just playing music
Ixion: What do you see happening to Shun in the near future?
Richie: Were negotiating a new management contract as we speak and were booking
a lot of dates up for the summer. So who knows? We'll see where all that takes
us.
Ixion: What bands have you been listening to lately?
Richie: Celebrity a great band from Nashville just released their new disk on
the One Day Savior label. The new stuff from Codeseven is awesome. And Alicia
Keys....just because of that voice.
Ixion: For anyone unfamiliar with Shun's music, what would you say to them as
the reason why to listen to Shun?
Richie: Shun is band that makes music to draw in a listener and lets them come
to their own conclusions about everything.
Ixion: Is there anything you would like to say in closing?
Richie: Thank you so very much and thanks to everyone that has ever given us a
chance by listening to one of our songs. We are truely in your debt.
Much love
