Ixion: Who am I speaking to, and what do you do?
System 86: I am System 86 of Toronto Ontario band ***No Assembly Required***
aka NAR.
Ixion: What equipment do you use?
System 86: I use Ibanez RG series guitars. 5150 amps. Boss effect pedals.
Ixion: How did No Assembly Required form?
System 86: It took years in the making. We officially have been around since
1999. But the idea for it started back in 1994. Luca had the name picked out
since then. And I always had ideas for a band. I was very picky about what I
was going to get into. When Luca and me met back in 1999, It was set. We
connected instantly. Then from that point things started to move very
quickly for us. Most of our success I think comes from the fact that
musically Luca and I are 100% dead on in what we are thinking. That is one
advantage I think we have that many bands will never have.
Ixion: How did you acquire the name System 86?
System 86: The name. That is a long story. I promised I would only ever
answer that question once. And I did so I will not get into it again. But if
you check past interviews on our site
"http://www.nar.musicpage.com";
You will find the full answer in detail.
Ixion: Whats your real name, if you don't mind?
System 86: System 86
Ixion: NAR recently had a line-up change, what happened that you changed
drummers?
System 86: We actually recently changed our drummer and our bassist. We only
do this for the purpose of getting better. Like I said before Luca and me
are 100% focused. It is hard to find other members willing to give the same
effort. We want to move forward, and we always do. This was something that
needed to be done to move forward. It was a time in our life where we have
changed we are ready to handle a lot more and this is the most solid line up
we have ever had. We are already gearing up for our upcoming tour and things
look like they are going to go great.
Ixion: Give me a run-down of the current line-up.
System 86: Luca on Vocals, D-Myze on Bass, Trentrod on Drums/Electronics,
and myself System 86 on Guitar.
Ixion: What is the Canadian music scene like?
System 86: Pathetic. Its really sad. A lot of great bands here that will
never get noticed cuz most Canadian labels only sign pop acts and out dated
rock and roll bands. I hope some day NAR will open Canada's eyes and they
can realize that if they focused on all their talent; Canada as a country
can be known for harboring some of the worlds greatest bands.
Ixion: Are there any bands that us "yanks" should be aware of?
System 86: ***No Assembly Required*** watch us. We are full of mechanical
surprises.
Ixion: Does NAR ever plan to make a migration to the USA?
System 86: We are actually planning lots of shows their, starting in March
2002. It will all be part of our "All The Bleeding tour".
Ixion: Describe your music. What is it about your sound that draws listeners?
System 86: Not sure what makes people like us. All I can think of is that
our music means a lot to us, and we put out what we enjoy playing and what
we feel strongly about. I am guessing people can pick up on it and respect
us for that. We try to put out good catchy music that is filled with
personal shit. Stuff that has meaning behind it. Honest music. It is good
that some people can connect with us and enjoy it half as much as we do.
Ixion: In recent months, NAR has released a 7-track ep titled, "All The
Bleeding", how can one acquire the album?
System 86: They are available at any one of our shows. Or online at
"www.hmv.com" its a Canadian based site. We hope to have it available on
other sites soon. But the CD is for sale very cheap. And can be ordered and
shipped worldwide.
Ixion: Explain the title "All The Bleeding".
System 86: The name for the CD came up one day when Luca and me were trying
to find a name for the new album. We were talking and it just came up. It
had to do with all the things we have gone threw to get to where we are. All
the bleeding is all the pain and emotion and everything we bled for to make
this band happen.
The name was perfect. The rest of the band did not like it. So to be fair we
took the names the band came up with and the fans. We got about 100 possible
names; we picked the best 10 and had fans vote. All The Bleeding won. Which
made me happy cuz there was actually meaning behind it.
Ixion: What song on the album best describes your sound? In other words, if
somebody wanted to get a good feel of what NAR is about, what song would you
point to?
System 86: "11 cent solution" is our oldest on the CD and is a fan fav. It
would be good to kind of get a good feel for us. "All The Bleeding" is the
newest song on the CD so that would also be good to see how we are changing
more.
Ixion: Explain "Kill Pop! Long Live Metal"... and how was it all started?
System 86: Kill Pop! Long Live METAL!!! Was started by Luca and me. The
scene here in Toronto had like no shows for metal bands. All shows were
infested with punk, ska, emo, rock bands and it was just shitty seeing how
there are so many loud bands here with no shows for their own. And its hard
to get shows when hardly anyone wants to book loud bands. So we put this on
2 times a year to have a big show featuring the best loud bands in the
Toronto area.
Ixion: Name off some of your influences... music or non-music related.
System 86: Musically I am influenced by so so much. I cant even list it
all. From back in the day when I first picked up a guitar it was cuz of
Black Sabbath. Then as the years went by I gained so many influences. Right
now I am influenced by bands like Machine Head, Fear Factory, Nothingface,
Tool, Spineshank. Even a lot of newer bands like Sw1tched, Dry Kill Logic, a
lot of different shit.
As for non-music related influences. I dont really think there are any that
have anything to do with my music other then just the way I live my life in
general. Which is writing music, promoting the band and watching many many
horror movies.
Ixion: What is NAR's current label status?
System 86: Well we are heading into the studio soon to record a new demo to
shop around for labels. So we are currently looking. We would really like to
do our first label release CD soon. We are dying to record a CD with out
having to limit our work cuz of lack of money to record.
Ixion: What is the band's plan in the foresee-able future?
System 86: Well after our new demo is recorded, we are planning on making a
new video for "All The Bleeding". Then we are going to tour in the USA a
bit.
Ixion: Do you have anything to say in closing?
System 86: Thanks for the interview, and for all the support for ***No
Assembly Required***.
