MEMPHIS and SAQQARA |

We spent the morning of the second day of our tour at Memphis and Saqqara. Memphis was the capital of ancient Egypt. Unfortunately, little remains of the city itself.....just a small museum with some of the artifacts found at nearby sites. |

An old statue of Ramses II at the Memphis Museum. Finely sculpted, but in a sad state of disrepair at the time of our visit. |

After a visit to the Memphis Museum, we drove to Saqqara, the necropolis of ancient Memphis. and home to the Step Pyramid of Zoser. This is not a real pyramid in the true sense of the word, but a series of mastabas constructed from mud bricks, and served as the tomb of King Zoser. We were not allowed to enter the tomb. |
