Chapter
eighty eight:
Becky
and Christy were sitting across from each other at the kitchen table.
Christy had requested a stop at the nearest bookstore and bought every bridal
magazine and every wedding magazine she could find. She had even purchased a
book titled “Your Perfect Wedding”.
They
had sat down to look at the magazines, and after a few minutes, Jenna sighed
heavily and pushed herself up from the table.
She
crossed the kitchen and removed a tub of ice-cream from the freezer, sitting
down with a spoon.
“You
okay?” Christy asked, finally looking up from her magazine.
“Fine. Just hungry.” Jenna
forced a smile. She removed her cell phone from her pocket and checked to see
if anyone had left a voicemail or any kind of a message. There was none. She
set her phone down angrily.
“Have
you eaten anything today other than ice cream?” Becky questioned.
“Nope. Just ice cream.” Jenna
shrugged. “Is that a problem?”
Becky
raised her eyebrows at her defensiveness, but did not pursue the comment. “Alright. No problem.”
Jenna
sighed heavily, clearly very upset.
“Who
are you trying to get in touch with?” Christy asked.
“No one. Why?” Jenna quickly replied.
“You
keep looking at your phone.” Christy shrugged and turned the page. “I just
thought you might be waiting for a call.”
“Nope. Just checking.”
Jimmy
the body-guard came into the room noisily. “Girls? There’s someone here looking
for Jenna.”
Becky
and Christy exchanged glances, then looked at Jenna
expectantly.
“Who
is it?”
“I
don’t know, I didn’t ask. He just said that he was here to see you, and that it
was important. He even gave the safe-word the guys had given.”
Jenna
pushed herself up from the table.
“Want
us to go with you?” Becky offered. “Just in case?”
“No, I can take care of myself.” She made her
way to the front entry way, and opened the door. Before she glanced at the body
guard and coldly demanded “You coming or can I be alone for five minutes?”
He
held up his hands defensively. “I’ll be right here.”
Jenna
walked out the front door, pulling it closed behind her. She stood on the front
porch, using her left hand to shield her eyes from the blinding sunlight.
In
the middle of the long driveway was parked a yellow cab, and from the back
seat, a tall blond haired man emerged, closing the door behind him.
Jenna
stood frozen in place, almost afraid she was dreaming.
When the man in front of her smiled at her, she finally realized she was awake
completely, and overcome with complete joy.
She
ran at top speed down the steps, across the front yard and leapt into the arms
of the man. “Luke!” She shrieked.
“Hey!”
He laughed, holding her tightly, even though her arms and legs were wrapped
around him in a vice-like grip.
“I
missed you!” She said. “God, I missed you so much.”
“I
missed you too, love.”
She
finally embraced him tightly one last time and slipped down his body and onto
her feet.
He
grinned at her from behind dark sun glasses. “Are you surprised?”
“I
am. I am so surprised…”
He
bent and gently kissed her lips.
At
that moment, all of her frustration, anxiety and tension concerning the
relationship vanished. She no longer wanted to break up with Luke; she wanted
to be with him forever.
He
took her hand in his and gave it a light squeeze. “I really did miss you. I was
miserable.”
“Me too. I think I ate about four tubs of ice cream.” She
smiled slightly.
Luke
chuckled. “Just a sec.” He released her hand, even
though Jen was completely reluctant. He helped the cab driver lift his bags
from the trunk and paid him with a crumpled twenty from the front pocket of his
jeans.
Jen
watched him intently, and he smiled at her, lifting his arms up in a
half-hearted shrug.
She
looked up at him, and slowly removed his sun glasses.
“Everything okay?” He questioned, placing his hands on her hips.
“Everything
is perfect… you’re here.” She smiled and kissed him again.
